It's all about location
We had a nice room with a Michigan Ave. view. Yes, this is an older hotel built in 1924 and it has small elevators and narrow hallways and smaller rooms. Our room happened to have a large bathroom. Everything in the room was well thought out and very functional. Many have said they think it needs refurbishment - we didn't think so. If you need a lot of space, you need to find a newer hotel. If you like "character", this is for you. The marble bathroom was especially nice. This is about midpoint of the magnificent mile, and super convenient. You can easily walk to most everything. Parking is next door and $60/night, but that is a common price in this part of Chicago. Breakfast is a bit expensive, but portions are generous and the wait staff was excellent. Mini bar in the room was $8 for a beer - common pricing. Others have pointed this out, but an in-room single cup coffee-maker would be nice. There is room on the desk for it and it is a pain to go down 22 floors in the morning for a cup of coffee. The internet was $10/day - seems like free Wi-Fi is standard these days, so not sure why not at the Allerton. Also, pretty strict on the 4PM check-in. I would definitely stay here again.
