Being the largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily has good connections with the rest of Europe. It has four international commercial airports, Palermo, Catania, Comiso and Trapani, and two domestic airports serving mainland Italy, Lampedusa and Pantelleria.

In the southeast of Sicily is the province of Syracuse, well known for its ancient Greek ruins, charming cities of Baroque architecture and beautiful Mediterranean beaches.

Booking a Flight to Sicily’s Main Airports

To reach Syracuse, book a flight to one of Sicily’s two main international airports, Palermo or Catania. Catania is the nearest airport to Syracuse and lies approximately 37 miles south of the city. Palermo on the other hand is 22 miles northwest of Sicily’s capital Palermo, 173 miles from Syracuse.

Catania Airport, also known as Vincenzo Bellini Airport, is Sicily’s busiest airport and serves major airlines such as Alitalia, Lufthansa and British Airways, as well as budget airlines easyJet and Ryanair. Upon arrival at the airport, you can get to the city of Syracuse by bus or train, taxi or car.

Palermo Airport is also served by major airlines such as British Airways and low-cost airlines easyJet and Ryanair. If you fly into Palmero, your quickest way to Syracuse is to hire a car and drive along the A19 across the island.

Sicily’s Smaller Airports

If you’re travelling Ryanair, Alitalia or Brussels Airlines, you may also be able to fly into the small Comiso Airport, in Ragusa, and located approximately 62 miles from Syracuse, much nearer than Palermo. Grab a snack at the airport and start your holiday.

Arriving in Syracuse from the Airport

Once in Syracuse, you’ll find it easy to travel around on the many local buses and trains. You might prefer to hire your own car to visit some of the more rural areas of the province, and to help you search our all the hidden beaches and explore the nature reserves. Syracuse also has a great range of accommodation from large international hotel chains, to small luxurious boutique hotels and budget bed and breakfasts, so will be able to find a great place to stay when they fly to Syracuse.

If you’re staying in the capital of Syracuse itself, you will find it just as easy to explore on foot, especially in its old town on the island of Ortygia. Some of the main highlights on the island include the ruins of the Greek Temple of Apollo and the impressive Syracuse Cathedral, which was built on the site of a Greek temple. Other reasons to fly to Syracuse for a holiday include its ancient archaeological sites of the Archeological Park of Neapolis and the Akrai Archaeological Park, both home to Greek theatres and interesting grottoes and catacombs. Syracuse’s long coastline of fine golden sandy beaches as well as its crystal clear waters and snorkeling and diving opportunities also make it a great holiday destination with a flight time from the UK of just under three hours.

very long wait for luggage, 40 mns!

Had to put hand luggage in the hold as all overhead lockers were full. Only drawback.

Everything was fine however very disappointed that British Airways are now charging extra for hold baggage, in flight refreshments and extra if you wish to choose your seat allocation before the 24 hour check in time. We always like the fact that you paid a bit more than the cheap airlines because these small luxuries were included in the price. Will probably shop around for a cheaper flight in future with which ever airline offers the best deal.

Good assistance services

Speedy boarding doesn’t work when you get a bus. You are first on the bus but then, depending on where you stand, can be last to get on plane. There fore the advantage of getting your bag near your seat or even staying in the cabin is much less. Not quite worth the money.

Security checks at Manchester Airport very poorly organised. Had to get down 3 flights of steps to a cramped cellar. Long queues.

Charge for one 23kg bag was rather excessive!

Plane punctual and luggage prompt.
