Book a Flight to Split

Croatia’s second largest city, and the gateway to some of the country’s most beautiful islands, Split offers history, culture, great food and excellent beaches. Book your flights to Split and discover all that this unique destination has to offer.

When to Book Flights to Split

Summer is peak season in Split and you’re likely to find that hotels and flights to the city are more expensive in July and August. The summer months are the perfect time to explore the many islands that dot the coast near Split while the city’s beaches are also perfect for soaking up the sun.

If you’re looking for a cheap ticket to Split, UK airports still generally offer a good choice of flights in early autumn. Often more affordable than travelling in the summer, September and October offer pleasant temperatures, thinner crowds and warm seas.

If you fly to Split in the winter months, you’ll find the weather a little hit and miss. Although the lower temperatures may make a dip in the Adriatic pretty unappealing, you will find that cheap flights are easier to find.

How to Find Cheap Flights to Split

When searching for flights to Split, try to be as flexible as possible with departure dates and airports.

Click the ‘Show flexible dates’ link at the top of the results page to see if you could save money by flying on a different day.

You can also use the ‘Nearby airports’ link, located beneath your chosen airport on the results page, to see if there are any other airports within easy reach of your departure or arrival points. You’ll often find that budget airlines fly to terminals outside of city centres, so searching for alternative airports can pay dividends.

Sort your search results by airline, departure time and number of stops using the filters on the left of the page. You can also use the drop down menu at the top of your results to arrange flights by duration and price.

How to Get Around Split

If you’re staying in the centre of the city, you’ll find Split very easy to navigate on foot. Most of the area around Diocletian’s Palace is pedestrianised so walking is often quicker than getting a cab if you’re only travelling short distances.

For longer journeys, buses are your best option. The city’s bus network is cheap, extensive and fairly easy to navigate, even if you don’t speak Croatian. Buses run from early in the morning until late at night but services can be very limited on Sundays.

Taxis are available throughout central Split and fares are generally affordable. If you’d rather drive yourself around, you’ll find a number of car rental services across the city.

Must-See Attractions in Split

The main attraction in Split is Diocletian’s Palace. As it takes up the majority of the historic centre, it’s virtually impossible to miss during your stay in the city. Built in the 4th century, it’s now occupied by residents of Split and a large number of homes and businesses can be found in its walls and structures. Spend a few hours exploring its winding streets and soaking up the atmosphere of this unique building.

Once you’ve had your fill of history, head to the coast to experience life in modern Split. As well as a choice of small city beaches, there are also regular ferries departing from Split to nearby islands where you’ll find some truly outstanding places to swim.

How to survive the flight to Split?
No matter where you’re coming from, flying can be a pleasurable experience if you’re well organised. We’ve put together a list of handy travel tips that will get your Split holiday started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

  • Travelling on a plane can be a great experience if you take the right gear. First things first, you’ll need basic toiletries, such as a toothbrush and some deodorant, a spare pair of socks and a good read. Secondly, find a spot in your hand luggage for your laptop, a charger, any vital medications and perhaps a quality neck pillow as well. Lastly, remember to take your passport, travel documents and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

  • Make sure you don’t have sharp objects (like a knife or scissors) lurking in one of the zippers of your hand luggage. Other banned items include flammable or explosive products, like aerosols and matches, and gels and liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

What to wear on a flight:

  • Comfort really should be your prime concern when selecting what to wear during your flight. Consider your footwear carefully too, as swelling of the feet and ankles are a common occurrence. Roomy, closed-toed shoes are your best bet.
  • A serious condition known as DVT (deep vein thrombosis) is a risk on long-haul flights. It results from blood clotting due to poor circulation. Doing foot and leg exercises in your seat is a great way to prevent this from happening. Wearing a pair of compression socks is also recommended.

How to get through airport security fast when flying to Split?
Being organised before your flight will make your getaway to Split a piece of cake. Check out our handy tips for a swift journey past security:

  • Your travel ID and boarding pass will need to be inspected by airport security personnel. Have them close by so you don’t hold up the queue.
  • After that, both you and your carry-on bag must be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, remove anything that might set the alarms off. Personal belongings such as your coat, belt and earphones need to go through the machine.
  • For just a few moments, you’ll need to unplug from the digital world. Your phone, tablet and any other electronics will need to go through the scanner.
  • Travelling with a new cologne? Not a problem. As long as the volume is no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and it’s stored in a clear zip-lock bag, you’re allowed to bring it with you on board.
  • Choosing your footwear wisely can save you several valuable minutes. Hiking or heavy-style boots are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on sneakers usually aren’t.
  • Airlines won’t allow any pocket knives or other sharp items in your carry-on luggage. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them in your checked baggage.
