Why You Should Take a Flight to Mykonos

A unique combination of classical Greek island charm, A-list holiday hang-out and hedonistic party destination, Mykonos has very broad appeal. Visit in high season to join the non-stop party in the beachside resorts or visit in the off season for a more relaxed experience.

When to Book Flights to Mykonos

High season in Mykonos is July and August. The island bustles with throngs of tourists flashing the cash and looking to enjoy a slice of the high life. Everything, from flights and accommodation to boat trips and even dinner, will be more expensive at this time. In recent years visitor numbers in the summer have exploded as Mykonos has earned itself a reputation as a celeb-friendly destination.

If you’re keen to avoid the crowds and are more inclined towards quiet beaches and low-key Greek island charm, then shoulder season offers more affordable flights to Mykonos and a wider range of budget accommodation. In the off season, the island is even more different still, with pelicans wondering deserted beaches as the slow pace of island life returns. Travel at this time will be cheaper but your choice of accommodation and facilities is also reduced.

Main Airports in Mykonos

Mykonos airport is located a couple of miles outside of the main town on the island and is its only air hub, handling just over a million passengers a year.

Transfer time from the airport to the centre of the town is just ten minutes with a transit bus service provided between the two, as well as to other popular tourist destinations. There is also a 24/7 metred taxi servicer located just outside the airport, with the journey to the town costing around €15.

How to Get to and Around Mykonos

At less than 10 miles across in every direction, Mykonos is the smallest of the Cyclades islands and relatively easy to get around. Transport options include buses, taxis, rental cars, scooters, bicycles or simply walking.

If you’re taking the bus, the main hubs are the two bus stations on either side of Mykonos town. Most other destinations on the island are easily accessible from here.

There are fewer than 50 taxis on the island so during high season they can be quite tricky to track down. Try the main rank in Manto square in the town, otherwise you’ll have to hope you get lucky and flag a vacant cab down in the street.

There is a boat service that takes passengers to some of the beaches on the southern side of the island, running hourly until 8pm in the summer.

What are the Must-sees in Mykonos?

The windmills of Mykonos town are perhaps the best-known landmarks on the island and date back to the 16th century. You can also enjoy a great view of Little Venice from here. This is a part of town noted for its picturesque medieval buildings with wooden balconies overlooking the sea. Walk down from the windmills and enjoy a sunset cocktail in this truly unique setting.

Of all the churches on the island, the most spectacular is the Panagia Paraportiani. This whitewashed Byzantine building dates back to the 15th century and is the most photogenic of the more than 400 churches on the island.

Mykonos is also well known for its archaeological remains, and a visit to the Archaeological Museum is highly recommended for history buffs.
