About Malaga

Malaga is one of Spain’s great southern cities. With lovely weather guaranteed all year round, there is a lot to like about this increasingly popular destination. Flying to Malaga places you right in the centre of Costa del Sol, where you have all kinds of holidays to choose from. Soak up some Spanish culture by staying in the elegant and historic city centre, or journey out of the city for a beach break at one of the area’s fantastic resorts.

Fly to Malaga International Airport (AGP)

Malaga’s airport is the fourth busiest in Spain, and it is well equipped to deal with the millions of visitors who fly to Costa del Sol each year. Plenty of airlines operate out of Malaga International Airport, including Thomson, Monarch, and Aer Lingus. Throughout the three terminals, there are lots of modern facilities on hand, including a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes. The airport is just 8 kilometres southwest of Malaga city centre, and its easily accessible location makes it the main airport for visitors travelling to any of Costa del Sol’s major resorts.

Getting Around in Malaga

Terminal 3 in Malaga Airport is home to a transport hub with both a bus and a train station, where you’ll find reliable connecting links to popular surrounding destinations. The journey to Malaga city takes around ten minutes by train on the Malaga Cercanias Line, but you can choose to travel by bus or taxi as well. If you’re heading to one of the Costa del Sol resorts, buses regularly run between the airport and the coast throughout the day. You can also catch buses to other southern cities like Granada and Seville from Malaga Airport.

If you’d rather not be restricted by public transport schedules, or if you intend to explore the wider area around Malaga, consider hiring a car. Over 20 car rental companies operate at the airport – many are located on-site, but shuttle buses also run every 5-10 minutes to those that are further away.

What to See and Do in Malaga

Delve into Malaga’s streets, and you’ll be surprised by the variety of activities and attractions on offer. If you enjoy museums and galleries, you’re in for a treat. Along the city’s so-called ‘mile of art’, you’ll find the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Pompidou Centre, as well as the Picasso Museum. Malaga was Picasso’s birthplace, so there is nowhere better to appreciate his mastery.

In the historic centre, you’ll discover many gorgeous samples of architecture amongst the buildings and ancient churches, most notably the Renaissance-period Malaga Cathedral. You can also explore the city’s rich history in the two medieval fortresses, Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle. As a coastal city, Malaga is renowned for its excellent seafood, so be sure to try out lots of fish dishes at the local restaurants while you’re there.
