The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coastline in Italy, close to the city of Naples, which features the municipalities of Vietri sul Mare, Ravello, Tramonti, and Positano. It’s an incredibly popular tourist spot, celebrated for its dramatic cliff faces, charming villages, and sweeping areas of woodland. This region is also home to historic sites such as Ravello Cathedral and the Museo Correale. Though the closest airport to the Amalfi Coast is Salerno Costa d’Amalfi, the majority of tourists visiting the area fly into the city of Naples.
The international airport at Naples is located 40 miles north of the Amalfi Coast, on the outskirts of the city. The airport has two terminals and operates flights to and from a number of destinations, the majority of which are in Europe. Though certain destinations are served by Naples International (NAP) year-round, many are only seasonal. The airport boasts a VIP lounge, and a variety of shops and restaurants, as well as travel services for getting into the city or on to the Amalfi Coast.
You can book direct flights to Naples International from several major cities, including London, Paris, Berlin, Istanbul and Casablanca. If you require a connecting flight, you can make your booking easily using Expedia’s multi-function booking tool. You may also require a connecting flight if you travel off-season, but the good news is that you can sometimes save money travelling outside of the most popular months. Travellers on a budget should look into low-cost airlines such as Wizz, Germanwings and easyJet. Seats in business class and first class should also be available, depending upon the time of year you travel and your departure point.
If you are flying into Naples International to travel on to the Amalfi Coast, then it could be a good idea to hire a car upon arrival at the airport. From Naples International, it takes around one hour to drive to Sorrento and 45 minutes to drive to Vietri Sul Mare – both locations are good starting points for a trip along the coast. If you are not planning on using a car to travel during your journey, rest assured that there are plenty of coach tours available along the Amalfi Coast. However, such tours should typically be booked in advance. Otherwise, local buses and taxis can be used to travel between destinations.
Part of the joy of a trip to the Amalfi Coast is that all the fun is in the journey. Each and every town and village has its own unique quirks, history and sightseeing spots – not to mention the world-famous pizza! With so much coastline to explore, you will find endless photo opportunities as well. Particular highlights include the beautiful (and aptly named) Emerald Grotto, the glamorous nearby island of Capri, and the Villa Rufolo in Ravello.
