Close But No Cigar
Nice spot overall but not quite the country chalet we were hoping for. The hotel itself was nice but right off the main street and a rather unattractive alley/roadway. The town it's in is nothing to speak of. Zero restaurants and nothing to see. You can drive a little to the neighboring town which is very charming. The bistro they offer as an alternative to the fine dining is not worth trying. Wifi was terrible and the pool had a light that was not secured and floating by its wires like a buoy. Didn't look terribly safe. I directed my children not to swim anymore. It was concerning to say the least.

Dear Madam, dear Sir, Thank you for the “nice spot” and your liking the hotel La Bonne Etape on the positive sight. Pictures of La Bonne Etape are available on our site and many others on the internet so that anybody can have an idea of the kind of property it is. I am sorry you did not imagine it as it is. I guess the dinner you had in La Bonne Etape Michelin star restaurant was good, because you say nothing wrong about it. The old entrance of the hotel is located on the main road you are right, (now breakfast buffet is served as you noticed during your 3 night stay) is 100 meters away from the other end of the hotel where the swimming pool is located. One cannot hear the sound of the road there. Please allow me to be more than surprised regarding the rather negative sight of your comments : Apart from our bistro “Au gout du Jour” where most of our residents enjoy lunch or dinner, three restaurants within one and two minutes walk may also serve lunch and dinner, plus four or five restaurants in the city a little farther. Is it possible to say for a restaurant “not worth trying” without experiencing it ? The light in the swimming pool had escaped from its shelter you are right and we do apologise about that, it has been replaced, but can you seriously imagine this is not secure ? The people at the reception are at your disposal during the opening hours from 7 am to around midnight every single day and could have told you about other restaurants to dine within walking distance and would have made reservations for you with great pleasure. Should you have asked for the security of your children, the receptionist could also have put your mind at rest after investigation about the light in the swimming pool. A VERY SPECIAL HOTEL
Never have we been treated with such care and devotion at a hotel! We didn't realize that this hotel is a member of the "Relais & Chateaux" group, so we were rather stunned when we saw the sign as we left the parking lot on arrival. The hotel was stunning and welcoming to say the least. Our room was large and well furnished (with character). Beds were very comfy. There were beautiful views from our room window, as this hotel was in a quiet part of the town with many trees. Landscaping around the hotel was lush, well kept, and lovely. We walked in the back "vegetable and fruit" garden, and then met the head Chef coming down the stairs in the hotel. He was very welcoming and friendly as well. "Nicholas" took care of us from start to finish and couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome. The food was unusually delicious. We would stay here again any time we were here, or even if we were at some distance. Thank you so much La Bonne Etape for providing us with a spectacular stay.

Fabulous dining and setting
We probably had the best meal ever - a must to eat in the gourmet restaurant! Their lavender honey ice cream for dessert was to die for. Our room was also fantastic with french doors that opened to a view over the pool and the hillsides beyond. Service was excellent. It was perfect!

Has always been excellent, now even better
I have stayed at La Bonne Etape many times over the past 15 years. The hotel has always been excellent, and it is well maintained and clean. the staff is courteous and friendly. I speak French, but my son does not and the staff speaks English which is a plus for him. The breakfast is always fresh and the coffee great. The location is very good off the main street, so there is no traffic noise. Of course both of the restaurants are great. which one you cloose depends on whether you are in the mood for a quicker great meal or a fantastic gourmet dinner.

A great time at "La Bonne Etape"
We travelled to France in November 2013 and stayed one night at "La Bonne Etape" for a romantic getaway. We had a great time, and the culinary experience for dinner at the restaurant was amazing. Jany Gleize put together incredible menus. The entire staff was courteous and friendly. Service was flawless. We are already planning to come back during the summer or late spring. Highly recommended!!!

classic luxury with fantastic restaurant
I have stayed at La Bonne Etape probably 15 times during trips to Provence and the French Alps visiting family. The hotel staff are always very courteous and helpful. The rooms are large and each has unique antique furnishings. The location is away from any traffic, so there are normally no sounds to disturb sleep. The gourmet restaurant is terrific, and the other restaurant is also very good. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for good value at a nice hotel with good restaurants.

OK for Passing Thru on One-Night Stay
PROS: (1) This hotel has 2 GREAT restaurants (a bistro & a fine dining restaurant). (2) The pool is well-maintained and an extremely pleasant aspect of this property. CONS: The hotel itself is in need of a complete systems replacement. Air conditioning was not working during our entire stay. Plumbing is extremely outdated. Bathrooms additionally should be updated. (Bathroom in our room was decorated with old red and gold - colored marble slabs. Fixtures and plumbing were 1980's vintage.) The beautiful one acre garden on this property is unkempt and choked with weeds (although still spectacular). SUMMARY: This property could be a really great and relaxing oasis if the deferred maintenance were addressed. This town has very little going on, and is not worth visiting as a specific destination.

Great Staff and Service...
Stayed one night at this great little hotel well finished with charming decor. The room was in the ground floor garden with it's own entrance again nicely finished with brick flooring antique furniture and a good sized bathroom. (Balcony rooms were also available.) The staff were welcoming, friendly and attentive, especially in the restaurant which is a must. Great creative food and some good wine. The breakfast was very nice too. Proprietor/Chef Monsieur Gleize is a charming host and runs a very well thought out polished and yet un-intimidating establishment. There isn't really much to see or do in Chateau-Arnoux-Saint-Auban itself, but the surrounding area has some good places to visit such as Sisteron and the Ganagobie Priory.

Charming hotel, but ......
This hotel is charming with lovely grounds and sparkling pool. It also has a gourmet restaurant with a great reputation. Unfortunately we did not eat here. We had a ground floor room overlooking the pool area. It was very nicely furnished but the bed was very small (I doubt it was a full double) and the bathroom only had a hand held shower in the bath. I understand that other rooms (more expensive) did have showers. This was one of the more expensive hotels on our trip so we were somewhat disappointed in our room.

Amazing Start to our French Honeymoon!
From the time we drove onto the grounds, we absolutely loved every aspect of our stay at La Bonne Etape. Gorgeous surroundings, first-class service from all hotel and restaurant staff, a lovely room that was clean and comfortable, and those views! They were to die for! This was the first leg of our honeymoon and we spent most of our time dining, lounging by the beautiful pool, enjoying our soaking tub (built for two) and walking around the area (there's a castle, fountain, and a lake/trail perfect for picnicking. Our room was technically "standard" but we'd never have known; we had OUTSTANDING views, beautiful furnishings, and more space than I've ever seen in a European hotel. The staff is more than happy to accommodate special requests, such as espresso by the pool, a light snack in the middle of the day, breakfast in bed, whatever you can dream up. They even coordinated a hot air balloon ride for us on our last day in the area. The restaurant is Michelin starred, and it's clearly earned that distinction.

Très bel établissement, à la hauteur de ses 4 étoiles ! Arrivés un jour férié nous n'avons pas pu profité du restaurant gastronomique car fermé, par contre le deuxième restaurant était parfait excellent rapport qualité prix !! Le cadre général de l'hôtel est somptueux avec une très grande et belle piscine. Mérite amplement ses 4étoiles

Très bel hotel
L'hôtel est plein de charme avec un joli jardin et un très belle piscine. Les chambres sont spacieuses et disposent de très belles salles de bains. Malheureusement l'une de nos chambre avait une climatisation défectueuse et les 2 nuits ont été difficiles. Nous avons dîné au restaurant gastronomique et cela vaut également le détour. Le petit déjeuner est également très bien.

Ett riktigt trevligt hotell som sköttes av en familj och hade så gjorts i flera generationer. Som alltid genomsyrade detta hela atmosfären. Man kände sig välkommen och blev väl omhändertagen. Middagen i deras gourmetrestaurang var superb och med excellent service. Läget var kanske inte det bästa, tråkig by med mycket genomfartstrafik. Men flera trevliga utflyktsmål i närheten som tex Sisteron.

Evitez les lundi et mardi, le gastro est fermé.
Gastro super , hotel tres calme, deco vieillotte. Personnel pro et chef de grande classe.
