Discover the beautifully preserved and restored details of the eastern gate of Hwaseong Fortress. It is named after the blue feng shui dragon.

Changnyongmun Gate is one of the four main entryways into the Hwaseong Fortress complex. Built in 1795, the gate kept King Jeongjo’s immense fortress secure on its eastern side. Admire the military might and innovative design of the fortress when you explore its centuries-old gateways. The gate’s architecture combines an imposing brick structure with traditional architectural elegance.

A great way to explore Hwaseong Fortress is following the perimeters of its tall stone walls and finding the historic landmarks along the way. Audio guides, walking tours and self-guided tours provide a special insight into this historic complex. Check out the fortress gateways, watchtowers and bastions. Many walking tours begin at the south gate, Paldalmun Gate. Make Changnyongmun Gate the first stop on your walking tour by strolling in a counterclockwise direction.

The eastern gate is one of the complex’s architectural highlights. It is a large single-story building constructed from stone bricks. See the tall stone archway in the centre of the gate, as well as its traditional ongseong, which is a semi-circular wall designed as a primary line of defence. You can also see the double arch, which links the outer and inner walls. The gate’s design is similar to its western counterpart. Unlike many of the other gates, however, the engravings for the Changnyonmun Gate remain largely intact. See if you can follow the inscription on the gate’s nameplate. Much of the gate was damaged during the Korean War in the 1950s, but it was meticulously restored in 1975.

As you explore the Changnyonmun Gate site, your guide may tell you about the area’s history. The adjoining grounds were used for military drills during the Joseon Dynasty. Look for the archery range also located nearby.

Changnyonmun Gate is the entryway on the eastern cardinal point of the Hwaseong Fortress complex. There is an admission fee to enter the complex and visit this site. The Hwaseong Fortress complex is open daily, year-round. Stop at the visitor centre on the western side of the complex to find out about walking tours and audio guides.
