Excellent location...outstanding cleaning staff.
Front desk staff need a lot of training...simple requests for them are difficult. .take time..laborious..they need training!!just trying to get a receipt was a chore. .
Tried to book in room massage for the afternoon in the morning and was told I have to call back reception after 12...huh!
They aren't efficient. .but this location is perfect. I think the room is pricey for the size..it's good quality ..you are paying for the location. It's easy to find which is a big plus
I go to Japan a lot and I lived there for 3 years.

Our goal was to have a more authentic experience while visiting Kyoto. This ryokan was a perfect place to meet this goal. The rooms are spacious yet spare with tatami floors and futon beds, we slept very well. The public bath was very clean and we enjoyed this at the end of every touring day, but was glad to have a private bathroom as well. The breakfast was very well prepared and gave us a good taste of all the authentic fare, though difficult for our Western palate. Wifi is limited to the small foyer and was often weak. The owners are very kind and attentive. While the location was tough to find even for a cab driver it was centrally located.

Our family of four (two kids aged 11 and 15) enjoyed a fantastic week at Gagakuan. Our host Saki was very responsive from the initial reservation until we departed. She even dropped off a delicious birthday cake for my daughter who celebrated her birthday the day before we arrived.
This is not a traditional hotel room but a traditional Japanese house in a very nice neighbourhood. The house itself is very well equipped and a fantastic way to experience living in a traditional family home. Although more than 100 years old and very traditional, it has been equipped with a number of modern touches that enhance the stay. Our two kids were absolutely fascinated with the house and the entire environment. For our purposes, it was ideally situated between Kyoto station and central Kyoto. The Gojo subway stop and the bus stop are both less than a five minute walk from the house. This allows you to easily access the public transportation system to all of the wonderful temples. We also took side trips to Osaka, Nara and a day trip to Hiroshima using our Japan rail passes.
Except for a few hot days (typical for Kyoto in the summer), we had a perfect time in Kyoto thanks to our great stay at Gagakaun and the kind generosity of Saki. We hope we get another chance to return to Kyoto and see the things we missed this visit and stay here again.

Overall, this is very nice hotel.
There are few minor cons:
1. Stair is too steep for elders
2. cooking equipment and washer/dryer machine do not have full translation how to operate
3. cookware and dishware need to be improved the cleanliness.

We loved our 4-night stay here. It was a wonderful experience to be in our own traditional five -room Japanese house in a beautiful part of eastern Kyoto near subway stations and easily accessible to every part of the city. A large shower/bath room, and two additional half baths, full kitchen and every conceivable appliance--even a lit enclosed garden off the living room, made this a 5 star home experience. Twin western beds in the largish upstairs bedroom, with floor cushions available to use living/dining room for additional traditional sleeping arrangements. This was a charming experience. Due to narrow steps to second floor this is not appropriate for people with accessibility needs.

This guest house sets the standard: clean, comfortable and well-run. The staff were very helpful and polite. The sleeping areas were clean and comfortable. I slept well each night. It's location, just 5 minutes walk from Nijo station, is perfect for whatever you need or wherever you want to go to in Kyoto.
If you're looking for somewhere to base yourself for seeing Kyoto then this is the place for you. If you're looking to get drunk and party then look elsewhere.

Loved staying at Khaosan Kyoto Theater and will definitely be seeking out Khaosan hostels for future trips! Friendly staff and conveniently located within walking distance of multiple train, metro and bus stations. Lots of options for food and shopping in the area as well.

I enjoyed my stay at Guesthouse Yahata. It has affordable price with clean rooms. The hotel is located in a very quite neighborhood. It was fun for me to experience tatami the first time. The owner is a very nice lady. She planned a one-day trip agenda with beautiful attractions while I was there. Also, I accidentally left my glasses while I was leaving to Tokyo. It was very kind of her to offered to mail it to my new hostel. Overall, I highly recommend this place.
