Pocket Guide: Cartago

Your Hotel Stay in Cartago

Cartago hotels, hostels and B&Bs are generally mid-range and budget friendly, placing you comfortably in Costa Rica’s central highlands, nearly 5,000 feet above sea level. Surrounded by historical and cultural attractions in a pleasantly mild climate, you’ll find plenty of excellent places to shop and eat and experience the real Costa Rica.

Welcome to Cartago

Foodies should head for the Cartago Central Market, with its mouth-watering array of fresh local fruit and vegetables, aromatic spices and tasty snack stalls. Then, with a full stomach, spend a couple of hours taking in the striking murals in indigenous styles and the attractive gardens at the Museo Municipal de Cartago, housed in a former prison -- some of the displays are exhibited in the original cells.

Cartago’s Beautiful Churches and Picturesque Ruins

At the end of Avenida Central is the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles, a must-see for any visitor to Cartago – built in 1639 and destroyed in an earthquake, it has been restored in a blend of colonial and Byzantine style, with an exceptionally pretty exterior and a dramatic dark-panelled interior. Also on Avenida Central, a ten-minute walk away, the Santiago Apóstol Ruins is a Cultural Heritage site of a church that was never completed thanks to one earthquake after another. Now it’s a blend of picturesque ruins, beautiful gardens and water features. And to complete your church tour, head for the Iglesia Maria Auxiliadora, once the chapel of an orphanage but destroyed in 1910 and since restored; the church’s attractive design and interesting history makes it well worth a visit.

Natural Attractions around Cartago

The Savegre Reserve in the mystical cloud forest is home to an astonishing array of bird species, including the famous quetzal. In the Savegre Reserve, you’ll find fine hotel accommodation, an excellent range of walking and hiking trails, and expert guided tours to help you tick off as many species as possible. There are spa and wellness facilities and opportunities to try horseback riding and fishing. You might also like to see the Jardin Botanico Lankester, a botanical garden famed for its spectacular collection of orchids and Japanese garden.
