The location is excellent- just down the hill from the train/bus station. And just up the hill from the shopping district. Everything is walkable. The breakfast and dinner menu include multiple vegetarian options as well as soy milk and other allergen labeled items. This was unique to our experience at other hotels during our vacation.

The staff were very welcoming and helpful. I liked this hotel also for the location accessible to lugano stazione. I would like to commend the gentlemen in the front desk during dec 13 to 15 of my stay. I forgot to get their names. I would recommend this hotel.

Only 200 yards from the train station, straight down, a little difficult to find, but visible if you know where to look. Easy walk to the hotel, but difficult with bad knees.

We arrived in Lugano by train and the hotel is just across the road from the station, albeit many metres down the hill. No problem there are semi gentle ramps to the hotel front door. The staff at reception were jolly and helpful to say the least. Online check in streamlined the process and should be used at other hotels. This is a great innovation. Up the elevator and into the room. Spectacular room with amazing views of the town, lake and mountains from the balcony. A superb bed and air conditioning, blockout blinds nice bathroom made me wish I was staying longer. Not far back to the station for the Bernina express in the morning. Catch the funicular from the church next door or push your bags up the ramps if you are a bit fit. My only wish is there was the option of a plain sheet instead of the Swiss dogonas available on the beds in summer. This would be a greener option on hot nights.

Short family stop in Lugano. Great location and easily accessible to downtown and the lake. It was a very nice room, the a/c worked well and the bathroom was a nice size. Breakfast was lovely.

this hotel is close to the train station, 5 minutes walk down the stairs from the train station. Nice clean room and 5 minutes walk to the city center and lakeside.

Good but overpriced
As other reviewers noted... even four years ago, the rooms and bathrooms are really dated, at least the one we got. That said, it was incredibly clean and comfortable but just be prepared for a very old hotel. Dinner was good and breakfast was fine. There are some great views from the balcony if your room has one. Service was very good.

Hotel Federale Lugano was very convenient to the bus and train station. Staff were very nice. The property was very well cared for. We had a quiet, very comfortable stay!

We had a lovely room with panoramic views and two balconies. The view of the town and lake were wonderful. The staff were always very attentive. They have a delicious breakfast buffet. I would not hesitate to stay here again. It has a great location, you can walk to the train station and to town.

Amazing hotel but difficult access
Check in was fast, excellent service by Mr. Giuseppe at the front desk. He was very helpful in arranging a late dinner for us. The hotel staff is amazing. The hotel is very close to the train station but reaching there with luggage can be a major issue especially at night or if the weather is bad.. the only access to the hotel is to go down through a steep hill or stairs. There is a cable car from the train station but you have to climb up the hill to the hotel. On our return trip, we had to take a cab to go back to the train station with our luggage...

We appreciated that the Hotel is a short, easy walk from the train station and then a quick walk into town. What sets the hotel apart is the service from the staff -- everyone from the front desk to the waiters at breakfast were so friendly and helpful. It was really a great experience.

Room is older than what it appears in the photos. Generally clean but shower condition is fair. Water didn’t drain fast enough. Good location but I think the price is still high for the room standard. Service is good though.

I can call this hotel a mystery hotel. When the taxi drops off at the hotel your first feeling is that you are in an isolated place. But when you leave the hotel turning left you yourself in the center of the shopping area. And I really loved my room and its balcony.

This is a good hotel near the station. It’s down hill to the town and lake and there is a funicular to get you back up the hill again. Rooms clean and comfortable. Good breakfast. Friendly staff.

Sweet hotel, great locations. A bit of miscommunication at the beginning. The sweet manager sent someone to meet our train (who ever does that). We didn't know so we took a cab. We hadn't received his email. Staff very attentive and personable. Lovely drinks in the bar, great views, perfect location for strolling and shopping through Old Lugano.

A friendly staff in a nice hotel in a lovely town. It's a very quick and short walk downhill from the train station. (Nice on arrival, but you'll have to take your bags back up hill on departure.) On short notice they added a bed to the room when another person joined our party. (For a small cost.) Great breakfast!

The staff were great! We felt really welcomed from the moment we arrived. Parking was right under the hotel which was great. However, for the price we paid we expected more (we also realize it may be that Lugano is a very expensive place to stay). The hotel and the rooms were pretty old. The room itself although pretty spacious was tired. The walls were dirty and marked in many places. It wasn't at all what we were expecting. However, the bathroom was nice and the balcony was perfect. Also, in a great location. I guess we were just disappointed how much we spent for a room at this hotel.

Due to central heating in hotel which was too warm for me hotel immediately offered to move me to a larger room w’large door and balcony to leave open for cool room. Very appreciative! Fabulous front desk staff. Fantastic location. Large selection and tasty daily breakfast.

Perfect stay with perfect hosts!
A perfect stay for my family of 3 at Hotel Federale Lugano! The Hotel is located a very short walk from the Lugano main train station in the old town and a very easy walk to Lake Lugano and the surrounding restaurants and shops. Room was spacious, well appointed, and very comfortable. We loved having a kettle in our room; a feature not available in many Swiss hotels. The daily breakfast was of a very high quality and also delicious. But what really set the Hotel apart from all the very many hotels I stayed at were the exemplary staff. Genuine attentive first class service generally with special mentions for a few pple we met. Sergio at the Reception arranged for a complimentary bed to be provided when told that I was travelling with my 4.5 year old daughter. Giuseppe at Breakfast was efficient, kind and went out of his way to make my daughter comfortable. But the most amazing gesture was the effort the Hotel took to help arrange for my daughter’s toy rabbit (which we accidentally left behind) to be sent to our next destination. We are truly grateful and appreciative of their efforts and to us, Hotel Federale Lugano really delivered on providing a first class experience for their guests.
