The décor is quite dated and could maybe do with a bit of updating in places. The hotel is generally very orange! There’s lots of rattan and cane furniture. But you soon get used to the 70s feel and it is actually pretty good value for money overall.
We stayed on the 3rd floor in a room with a balcony overlooking the sea. I think maybe these are ‘club’ rooms. Rooms higher up in the main building don’t have the balcony. The rooms were fine. A double bed was 2 singles pushed together though, which I always hate as I disappear down the middle. The bathroom was fine, clean enough but the bath looked a bit tired, as did the towels. It’s not 4* luxury but for the money I think it’s fine. On the first day we arrived we had terrible weather all day and night and our room flooded with rain water under the door from the balcony. However, this was very extreme weather! Not the hotel’s fault. Good selection of tv channels. Wifi in communal areas only although on the 3rd floor we could often get it in the room. The room was fine.
Food was pretty good and plentiful. Restaurant staff were very friendly and worked hard. All inclusive is pretty good value. We ate well despite being slightly limited as vegetarians.
Staff were always friendly and helpful, especially the bar and restaurant.
This hotel is perfect for either an adult hotel stay or a self catering holiday. Plenty of food and refreshments available on the complex and lovely restaurants nearby with local supermarkets for self catering. Perfect transport links for getting into the capital Funchal and very reasonable cost if you stick to the buses. Taxis become very expensive.

We liked this hotel as it is in a quiet spot, located on the cliffs in the village of Canico de Baixo, which is a short drive from the capital, Funchal. The hotel has a free bus going to Funchal 3 times a day, which was great, but the local buses also had a fairly regular timetable. Although it was February, it was warm enough to sit out on a sunbed on one of the many areas cut into the rocks. We were able to use the facilities of the hotel next door, which had an indoor pool and gym.The breakfast each morning was more than adequate, and the many options varied from day to day. The reception staff were very knowledgable about the island, and were able to book trips for you.
The hotel itself is in excellent condition with modern facilities. Even the basic room is very comfortable & comes with a small personal garden patio space. Beds are super comfy with sturdy pillows. Good breakfast spread & staff always on hand. Very quiet location- perfect if you are looking for some rest & relaxation or if you plan to golf at the spectacular course down the road. The village centre is a 5 minute walk away - there is not much to see & do there but the restaurant there does a good bbq (espetada). The start of the Portela to Ribeiro Frio levada walk is 4 kms away - easy, flat walk but also incredibly boring if going solo. Beware that taxis are very expensive so if you do not have a car arrange a private transfer in advance. If taking the bus to Funchal, arrive at least 20 mins in advance at the bus stop as it can leave earlier than scheduled time.

A popular resort area, Caniço is on the southeastern coast of Madeira, a short drive from the capital city of Funchal. The clear waters of nearby Garajau Marine Park attract scuba divers, who are likely to see Atlantic manta rays and large fish species such as groupers. Several top-ranked golf courses are also within easy reach.
