Manchester is one of the UK's greatest and most exciting cities, built on the wealth brought by the Industrial Revolution, in which it played a leading role. Arkwright's revolutionary new spinning machines, driven by steam, transformed the landscape and the lives of millions of people throughout the region. Cotton made Manchester, and the scene was set for its appointment with industrial destiny as soon as Flemish weavers settled in Bolton in the 14th Century.

The city never looked back, and even today it lovingly cherishes its great industrial heritage in museums such as the Museum of Science and Industry.
