Pocket Guide: Cambridgeshire

From the stunning architecture of the colleges in Cambridge to the magnificent Fens - which stretch for miles - Cambridgeshire offers something for everyone, whatever the time of year. Take a peek at the striking university colleges where many world leaders have studied, enjoy locally-sourced food in the wide selection of foodie-venues in the county, from gastro-pubs and breweries to Michelin-starred restaurants, or enjoy a spot of culture with a visit to the theatre or a museum.

As you might expect from an area that offers everything from high-class dining and culture to outdoor adventure and wildlife watching, the range of accommodation on offer suits all needs and budgets too. With a wide choice of great boutique hideaways, B&Bs, guesthouses and contemporary business hotels available across Cambridgeshire, finding your ideal place to stay is simple.

History and Culture in Cambridgeshire

While you might find yourself walking next to a future Prime Minister during your visit to Cambridge, and the impressive colleges dating back as far as the 13th Century are an essential must-see, there is far more to the city than just its reputation for academic excellence. Here you'll find a mix boutique and high-street brand shopping, cool cafés tucked away down quaint, narrow old streets, and a lively entertainment scene at the Corn Exchange and Arts Theatre. There are also plenty of good hotels and guesthouses right in the city to choose from, to make exploring and enjoying all Cambridge has to offer that bit easier.

Enjoy the History and Nature of Cambridgeshire at Your Leisure

Beyond the city of Cambridge there is a whole county to explore. The city of Ely has a stunning cathedral with a unique octagonal tower and an interesting museum set in the city's former gaol. Another cathedral, which dates back almost 900 years, can be visited in Peterborough and you can enjoy a day at the races in the historic market town of Huntingdon.

Alternatively, head out to the countryside to get back to nature. The marshy Cambridgeshire Fens cover 200 square miles of agricultural land, producing much of the delicious produce available in local cafés, restaurants and farmer's markets. The Fens are wonderfully flat, making cycling a pleasurable way to explore, and with the wide choice of accommodation available you can take your time and leave the rush of the city behind. Bring your own bikes, or rent a bike at one of the many cycle hire locations, including at the National Trust's oldest nature reserve Wicken Fen, which is home to over 9,000 species including bittern, cuckoo and dragonfly.

Get Active or Simply Relax at Your Hotel in Cambridgeshire

Whilst there's lots to see and do during your visit to Cambridgeshire, the reputation for excellent local food makes it a popular choice for those who would rather relax and do nothing for a few days. Elgoods Brewery produce award winning ale in Cambridgeshire, and a trip to their brewery to see how it's made absolutely has to be finished off with a tasting session to sample this great local produce.
