After a hectic long weekend sightseeing in Funchal it was nice to have a few days relaxing by the beach at the other end of the Island which reputedly gets more sunshine than the capital and this new modern hotel seemed the best luxury option at a very reasonable price which allowed us to upgrade to a suite which was a good decision - very large comfortable room with a terrace on 2 sides, a huge bed from which we had a marvellous view of the ocean and the marina. It also entitled us to free daily entry to the indoor pool & spa (treatments extra) which afforded us a further saving. The rate also included free breakfast & Wi-Fi.
"Quietly located with excellent views over the sea."
Enjoyable stay at this quietly located hotel. enabling access to walks along a levada. We did not hire a car but used the shuttle bus to visit Calhetta, Otherwise friends living locally were able to show us around the island. I did notice that most people did hire cars or used the shuttle bus. Would definitely return to this friendly hotel.
This was our second stay at the Paul do Mar Aparthotel. The staff and very friendly and all spoke very good English. All rooms are oceanview and only 100 feet from the shore. From your balcony, you can watch the sun go down over the ocean every night. Breakfast was good with hot and cold food and fresh fruit every day. Dinner was excellent. We swam in the outdoor pool (unheated) and the indoor (heated pool). A rental car is recommended to get from the hotel to the many hiking routes and levada walks at the west end of Madeira which we consider to be the most beautiful part of the island.
We enjoyed our stay very much; the staff were soo friendly and helpful.
Reception printed off our return boarding passes (TAP have short check-in windows).
Restaurant is very good too; room was spacious but bathroom needed central heating; hot water supply little erratic some mornings.....
On the plus side, we saw the plans for the modernisation and renovation works to be started in 2014 so are looking forward to the "new look" and extra facilities on our next visit......

Calheta is on Madeira’s sunny southwestern shoreline. Here, mountains rise precipitously above the sea, affording panoramic views. Calheta is home to Madeira Island’s only sand beach, a manmade, golden strand. Deep-sea fishing charters and sleek yachts set out from Calheta’s modern marina. Cabo Girão, east of Calheta, is one of Europe’s highest sea cliffs.
