Tap your feet to the regional folklore music while you witness one of the world’s most romantic horse riding shows in Peru’s coastal desert city of Trujillo.

While in Trujillo, Peru’s official “National Capital of Marinera,” visit Caballos Peruanos de Paso y Marinera to attend a unique dance show performed by the special breed of horses. See local men and women in Spanish-colonial costumes work harmoniously with these Paso horses to perform one of the north’s most cherished traditions.

Upon arriving at the walled field that forms the Caballos Peruanos de Paso y Marinera arena, get a local beer from the bar, take a seat under the marquee and settle in for an hour of folkloric entertainment.

Each show starts with a brief explanation, in Spanish, of the history of this special breed of horses, which have their own distinct gait, and the evocative Marinera dance.

Next is a horse riding show during which you can admire the gracious Peruvian Paso horses perform several clever tricks with their costumed riders.

The highlight of the show is of course when one the horses dance the actual Marinera Norteña. This traditionally is an elaborate courting dance, one that is performed with both emotion and precision. This clearly Spanish-influenced dance is a ballad, a love song, that includes some fast footwork, as well as gentle moves with handkerchiefs and long dresses.

The fact that one dance partner is a handsome man on a tall horse and the other a beautiful but vulnerable woman on bare feet, makes this show a romantic spectacle.

Afterwards, have your picture taken with the horses and the dancers or enjoy the chance to ride a Peruvian Paso horse around the arena.

TheCaballos Peruanos de Paso yMarinera venue is located just outside of the city of Trujillo. Either take a taxi here or book tickets in town with a local tour operator before you go to get your transportation prearranged. There are normally two shows each afternoon, also on Sundays and public holidays.

Be aware that the arena is open to the elements, so wear sunscreen or protective clothing and a sun hat. The entry fee does not include horse riding, so also bring some extra Peruvian soles for that optional experience.
