Bathed in sunshine for most of the year and just a stone’s throw from several stunning waterways and recreation areas, Bullhead City, Arizona is a popular destination for both US and international holidaymakers. Named after a distinctively shaped rock that once stood on the banks of the Colorado River, Bullhead City traces its roots back to the construction of the Davis Dam in the 1940s. Though the rock has long since disappeared beneath the waters of Lake Mohave, the name lives on, and today the city is a popular choice for holidaymakers looking for hotels under the desert sun.
Downtown - Downtown Bullhead City is laid back, sleepy and welcoming. As most of the city’s hotels are located along the Colorado River and close to Lake Mohave, Downtown is mostly reserved for shops, restaurants and amenities.
The Colorado River – The mighty Colorado River provides Bullhead City with a huge number of recreation opportunities. A wealth of water sports, including kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and sailing, can be found on the waterway, making adventure sports hotels popular. It also gives visitors to the city plenty to do and a welcome place to escape the desert heat.
Lake Mohave – Like the Colorado River, Lake Mohave offers residents and holidaymakers in Bullhead City a great place to relax, have fun and get active. Walking and biking trails crisscross the landscape, while those looking for a more relaxing break can take a dip in the lake’s refreshing waters and relax on its sun drenched shores.
Oatman – Holidaymakers searching for a taste of the old Wild West need look no further than a hotel in Oatman, Arizona. Located just outside Bullhead City, Oatman was once a thriving mining town. When the mines shut down, it made its living catering to the travellers that plied the old Route 66. Today, visitors can see staged gunfights on the weekends and feed the wild donkeys which roam the town’s streets.
Bullhead City’s most prominent sight is the Colorado River. Flowing along the length of the city, the river provides jobs, recreation opportunities and a choice of stunning views. The shores of Lake Mohave are also well worth a visit. The desert that surrounds the lake is full of hiking and biking trails, while keen photographers will relish the opportunity snap the unique flora and fauna found close to the lake’s shore. Further afield, visitors can learn more about the region’s history with a visit to the fascinating Grapevine Canyon Petroglyphs on Spirit Mountain which date from 1100 – 1900 AD.
With both the Colorado River and Lake Mohave on its doorstep, Bullhead City is not short of things to do. Water sports available in Bullhead City include kayaking, white water rafting, paddle boarding and sailing, while visitors who’d prefer to keep their feet on dry land can have a go at mountain biking, golf and hiking. If you’re looking to throw in your lot with Lady Luck, hop over the state line into neighbouring Laughlin, Nevada where you’ll find a choice of casinos lining the main street.
