Pocket Guide: Bristol City Centre

A fascinating medieval maritime centre, where the chocolate bar was invented at the J. S. Fry & Sons chocolate company in 1847, Bristol city centre is among the top ten most visited British cities for international visitors. It's also the location of the Bristol Rovers and Bristol City football League clubs, and has been the home of many influential figures such as Damien Hurst, Carol Vorderman, and Banksy. From luxury four star and five star hotels to value-for-money bed and breakfasts, Bristol has plenty of great accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.

Bristol Cathedral

If you love all things medieval, don't forget to see Bristol Cathedral, which was originally an Augustinian Abbey in the 12th Century. This striking church, which is 91 metres long, has a well-preserved Norman chapter house and magnificent Gothic windows, and overlooks College Green, an elegant open space featuring the iconic Queen Victoria Stature. Just minutes from the cathedral is the majestic Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel, an exclusive four star venue with opulent rooms and an indoor pool and spa.

St Peter's Church

A little further north in the city centre is St. Peter's Church, a ruined 12th century landmark that suffered bombing during the Battle of Britain in 1940 and is now an important war memorial. It's part of the vast Castle Park recreational area, which also features the remnants of the Saxon church of St. Mary le Port that was also bombed at the same time.

The Harbour

You could take a short stroll along the College Green to the Harbourside, where you can find an extensive selection of places to eat out and nightlife venues. This area is known for its Run Harbourside Sports Trail, a mile-long measured route that is popular with runners and passes through picturesque Millennium Square and the Waterfront Square. Well within easy reach of other attractions such as the Bristol Hippodrome and Colston Hall, a stay at the four star Radisson Blu Hotel provides sophisticated, spacious accommodation with tea and coffee-making facilities and free WiFi.

The Brisfest

Events keep everyone entertained in Bristol all year round. Managed by The Bristol Festival Community Group charity, Brisfest promotes a broad mix of local music acts and artists, as well as many theatre performances and circus acts.
