Over a century ago salt was discovered in the soil of Boekelo, which quickly caused the first tourists to visit Boekelo and the salt water pool, which has unfortunately disappeared. This pool was so well-known nationwide, that it is still talked about to this day. Since then many things happened in Boekelo. A terminal was built for the Museum Buurtspoorweg from which a steam locomotive departs to nearby Haaksbergen. You can in fact buy tickets for this steam locomotive. Boekelo also has a (short) golf course. Moreover, every second Tuesday of the month from September to June a show is given at the De Buren cafeteria. For those who are interested in anything but horses there are plenty of other activities such as cabaret, performances by rock bands, an old vehicles day and carnival.
