We visited in October mid week 3 nights partly because it was a bargain price and partly to see the Getxo part of Bilbao - it was an interesting 30min watefront walk to the Bizkaia transporter bridge. We used the metro to get in to central Bilbao which was very cheap (using the Barik card) but the 10 minute walk to the station is rather bizarre and memorable involving three graffitti swathed underpasses. However it seemed a very nice quiet neighbourhood with lots of joggers and dog walkers in the park across the road so not scary. The room was spotless and with the windows closed there was no sound from the traffic on the busy road outside. The air conditioning was very good. There is only a dining room offering a 3 course set menu with 3 choices for 16.50euros which includes a bottle of wine and water per table which is quite reasonable but not always what you want. I enjoyed my fish dish but my husband hated his chicken which was like a cardboard biscuit. We did not try the breakfast. There is no bar or any way to just get coffee. The minibar charged 3.65 for a kitkat! We did not find any cafes or bars that we liked around the hotel and it takes about 30 minutes to get in to the centre on the metro but if you are interested in exploring the Getxo part of Bilbao I would recommend this hotel.

We stayed 4 nights over the Christmas holiday. Room only basis.
Hotel is impressive. Used to be a palace in the past. It's well located. Plenty of transport links to Bilbao close to the hotel and only a few minutes walk from town centre (Santurtzi). Views are great.
Room we stayed in was not facing the see (train tracks underneath) so was very quiet and spaceous. Facilities were great and the bathroom has everything you need including full size hair dryer. I believe rooms on the lower floors that face the see could be noisy because of the train.
In our experience, staff was very attentive. We requested a quiet room and they did their best to give us one.
I will definetely come back again
Spent 2 nights at the Gran Hotel Puente ...arrived by car via the ferry... not so grand these days and looks that it suffers from Spanish austerity..lack of staff and lack of upkeep, its a shame as it has good potential...
Don't expect chintzy furniture and carpets at this very trendy hotel. It is decor is very much black, white and silver, with wonderful vases, ornaments and pictures to match. But, it is very comfortable with places to sit in peace and quiet, access right onto the promenade for a stroll along to the beach, a restaurant and cafétaria serving a wide variety of excellent food. The staff are delightful and very helpful. We paid the extra for a sea view room which is well worth it. Our room was very comfortable and well equipped. And, a major plus, the hotel has its own underground garage as parking in the area could be a nightmare. The Metro station is about 5 minutes walk away and that is only 12 stops from the centre of Bilbao and the Guggenheim (at less than £3 a head return!). Our only complaint was finding the hotel which, although set back on a major road, is very discreetly marked and not easy to spot when driving by. But we loved staying here and would certainly return.
