Pocket Guide: Bermuda

The author of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain, would probably find many who agree with his assertion that he would be happy to bypass the eternal pleasures of heaven if he could just extend his stay in Bermuda. Now it’s time for you to stay in one of Bermuda’s gorgeous hotels. The ‘island’ is actually made up of 138 islands and islets, connected together by road bridges, to form the shape of a hook. The bait that covers this hook is natural beauty, and it has been ensnaring tourists for many years.

The island’s clear waters and pink sand beaches offer watersports, including some stunning diving and snorkelling, but there is more to Bermuda than just a beach paradise. Scenic golf courses stud the island and fascinating colonial towns with pretty pastel houses provide another reason to enjoy a day away from the gentle rolling waves. There are historic forts peppering the coastline and hiking trails offering panoramic views.

Areas & Neighbourhoods: Where to Stay in Bermuda

Hamilton – Book a Hamilton hotel and explore the pleasures of the capital city, which includes shopping, fine dining and exploring the many fine museums and delightful parks. Underground the attractions of the Crystal Caves await whilst, back on the surface, you can take in the historic Royal Navy Dockyards or enjoy the bandstand concerts in Victoria Park.

St. George – This fantastically preserved colonial settlement is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest surviving British New World town.

Southampton Parish – It is in the south of the island where the calmer waters mean the best beaches and seaside hotels can be found. Foremost amongst these is Horseshoe Bay Beach, whose pink sands are fortuitously fringed by rocky areas that offer great snorkelling opportunities.

Warwick Parish – If you came to Bermuda to work on that handicap there are some great golf courses to be found here. Warwick Parish is also the centre of the island’s horseback riding and home to stunning cliffs that offer wonderful views.

Things to See in with a Hotel in Barbados

The pink sand beaches are achingly beautiful but pale into insignificance once you don that mask and snorkel to explore the vibrant, vivid colours of the tropical fish underwater. Scuba divers can take boat trips out to see the historic shipwrecks that provide artificial reefs for the abundant marine life. Make sure you surface, however, to visit St. George, the epitome of colonial prettiness with its pastel houses, resolute churches and flower-decked winding lanes.

Things to Do When You Book a Bermuda Hotel

Those poor, tired feet after a day’s shopping in Hamilton can be revived by relaxing at one of the daytime concerts in its Victoria Park. Whale watching boat trips in March and April will take you to where the whale’s breach beyond the reefs of South Shore. There are eagles to be spotted, hopefully, on the golf courses of the island, or you can swing off to Bermuda Railway Trail instead, for spectacular views and the chance to encounter the historic forts. The international dining scene is stunning but make sure you also try some of the local specialities: codfish breakfast, fish chowder seasoned with sherry pepper sauce and dark rum, shark hash and sweet potato pudding.
