Holidays in Bavaria
A city trip in Bavaria offers varied excursion options to castles, fortifications and caves as well as a number of cultural and sports events. The Free State of Bavaria is located in the South-East of Germany, composed of the regions Swabia, Franconia and Old Bavaria which includes Lower and Upper Bavaria as well as Upper Palatinate. The landscape is hilly and covered by dense forests. High mountain peaks tower into the sky in the Bavarian Alps but in the lower mountain ranges as well. The Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany, measuring 2,962 metres. This mountainous region is a perfect holiday destination for hiking and skiing. Holidays in Bavaria are also ideal for city trips and visiting various sights. Many cities, such as Munich, Nuremberg, Kempten or Bayreuth have an old town in the city centre with buildings from various eras. Chiemsee and Ammersee lakes are perfect for swimming and diving.
A short trip to the Alp region is perfect for hiking, as are the forest areas in Franconia and Upper Palatinate. Travelling to the Bavarian Forest is a journey to a pristine, jungle landscape inhabited by wolves and lynxes. The lower mountains are approximately 100 kilometres in length and more than 1,000 metres high, such as the Großer Arber and Große Rachel peaks at almost 1,500 metres. A city trip to the Bavarian Forest will take visitors to spa towns such as Bad Kötzing and Bodenmais. The healthy climate in the underground healing tunnels is a particularity of this area.
In Franconian Switzerland, a short trip to Pottenstein is well worth it. Visitors will not only find a summer toboggan run and a rock pool with natural water but the largest stalactite cave in Bavaria as well. Take a guided tour through the labyrinthian tunnel system of the “devil’s cave” and marvel at stalagmites and stalactites. One of the attractions is a lit cave bear skeleton.
Visiting the city of Bayreuth in Bavaria generally includes a stop at the Richard Wagner Festival Hall. The building was designed in Hellenistic style by Wagner himself and built from 1872 to 1875. The opera house has outstanding acoustics and is home to the annual Bayreuth Festival. It is situated on a “Green Hill” surrounded by nature.
Book a city trip to Bavaria and be sure to visit the Alexandersbad castle in the Fichtelgebirge Mountains. This residence is located in the spa town of Bad Alexandersbad and was built in early neo-classical style. An alley leads from the castle to a mineral spring which is covered by a monopteros with a dome.
