The spa is terrific for adults only, and a great feature to have access in the morning and night for guests. Be aware rooms listed as 'sleeps 3' is incorrect. We had a six year old and thought a bed for parents and pull-out couch or cot was available and it was not. So if you have non-baby children, best get additional rooms, or stay elsewhere.

The building has that to the manor born vibe, and the rooms were spacious and comfy, with the requisite furnishings. The one glaring issue for me was the bathtub/shower. The unit stands high, so very typical of many European baths, and while there was a safety bar handle on the far wall to assist with getting into or up from the tub, there was not one on the wall where you would enter and exit the bathtub itself. This is such a major safety issue. It’s a no-brainer to address so am surprised that such an elite hotel would overlook something so basic. Also, the hotel needs to up its eco-friendliness. Small plastic toiletries might seem luxurious but at this point it’s just irresponsible! They can provide name-brand bathroom amenities in a socially responsible way!

Nice hotel, although I don’t feel as though the advertising on children not being able to use the indoor pool was at all clear. For this reason I would have stayed elsewhere. Also I think for the nightly rates the spa access window should be bigger. Other than that, decent hotel in a good location.

We all had a fantastic stay for my daughters birthday. The spa facilities were excellent, we also went to the spa, just over the road. Shops, parking restaurants all close by also a wide range of shops for everyone.

A magnificent facility well-maintained and with friendly, highly trained staff who made every effort to help with our needs. The location is perfect: close to the main street and the Abbey but just out of the way of the noise and traffic. Would strongly recommend.

An excellent stay for 2 nights in Bath for our anniversary. Staff were extremely helpful and went above and beyond to accommodate us. The spa was brilliant, we had a bath spa room so could access at any time and was good to have time that was less busy. Great central location. We would definitely reccomend!!

Really nice hotel for thermal waters. Spa reception was super helpful and very welcoming, different pools allow warm or hot water and although one of the saunas was out of order for the 2 day duration we were there, the infrared sauna was working (except for one infrared panel out of about 6). The steam room worked incredibly well and the fresh towels with essential oils and fresh waters with cucumber were a delight to have at hand. The pool area is kept very clean and there are plenty of towels and great facilities in the changing rooms. We had to remind one of the room cleaners to give us clean spoons, cups and paper toasters the second day, but they were incredibly prompt to provide these and overall service was good. One expects very high quality service at a 5* hotel and the Gainsborough certainly fulfilled it.

My second time visiting and again a very enjoyable stay. The hotel is lovely and in a convenient location for the town and train station. Staff were very helpful during our stay and the spa area is a real highlight. Only minor disappointment vs previous stay was limited opening times for the spa that were complementary. As a result during these times it was very busy. Overall though I’d recommend if you’re visiting Bath then to stay here.

Ideal location and Helpful staff
The hotel is ideally located nearly in the center of Bath and, importantly, atop one of the hot spring outlets that give Bath its name and history. Each morning and each evening, guests can use the baths for free for two hours. This is not at all the normal thing I would do but because of the Roman connection, I tried it. It was a great experience in many ways. The entire staff of the hotel was well-trained and eager to help. The concierge staff was particularly sharp and I asked plenty of them. They always came through. We stayed in a newer wing of the hotel which involved a bit of a maze getting from the lobby to the room. But it was quiet and getting to the street took less time.

The hotel provides a very personalised service. The reception and concierge would always address my by my surname which made me feel special. I can’t fault the stay. I would’ve given 5* but I wished the morning spa hours operated from 7am.

Booked a room upgrade prior to my stay after the email from the hotel offering this option.. this was not fulfilled.. instead the room we had had a few issues with it.. certain plug points not working, the fridge not working, the heated towel rail not working etc. this was all on top of the extremely loud music coming from outside of the Hotel - I called down to explain and was told there was nothing that could be done as they were sold out - a really poor service considering the amount of money spent on the stay

Incredible hotel but a few suggestions to improve
I love this hotel. It's beautiful, the location is perfect and team is very friendly. I do think there are a few subtle changes that could happen to improve the experience. 1) For hotel guests we can only use the spa for a few hours morning and evening. For a room costing £350 a night this feels a bit cheeky 2) I noticed a few cost saving measures such as the hot chocolate at the spa being removed and only for spa-day guests. Again this is a soft change but an important one. I do like this hotel and will be returning but some attention on the softer benefits is crucial for me.
