Avenyn’s full name is actually Kungsportsavenyn, and it’s Gothenburg’s main boulevard, featuring a host of attractions from museums and galleries to shops, bars and restaurants. It’s also easy to find when you first arrive in Gothenburg – the airport shuttle runs along Avenyn.
There is an excellent range of accommodation near Avenyn. Along Avenyn itself, you’ll find a selection of higher end hotels. For budget options, including two-star hotels and great-value hostels and B&Bs, try looking further afield in locations such as Haga and Annedal, which are still within easy reach of Avenyn on foot or on public transport.
From Cultural Attractions to Buzzing Nightlife
Avenyn begins at Kungsportsplatsen, where it crosses the canal, and runs to Götaplatsen and Carl Milles’ statue of Poseidon, where you’ll find the Museum of Art, the City Theatre and the Gothenburg Concert Hall.
This is Gothenburg’s most famous street, and with its attractive mix of Renaissance-style and modern architecture it is perhaps the most attractive too. Crackling with activity both day and night, it’s a good place to wander and get a feel for the real Gothenburg. During long summer days, there are some great options for al fresco dining here, while in winter the trees along the boulevard are festooned with twinkling lights. When the sun goes down, Avenyn really comes alive, as its bars, restaurants and nightclubs quickly fill.
Don’t just stick to the main strip, however; the various side streets are worth exploring too. This is particularly true of the attractive Vasa area with its famous church, while Götaplatsen, at the south end of the boulevard, is Gothenburg’s cultural hub.
Shop ‘Til You Drop
If shopping is your thing, a hotel near Avenyn will be perfect for you. The street is packed with boutique clothes stores, bookshops and much more, and you can find more esoteric souvenirs and presents in one of several nearby museum shops, such as that of the Gothenburg Museum of Art and Design or the Universeum Science Centre. Head for Södra vägen to find an eclectic selection of independent shops and restaurants.
