I was in town with my two girls (10 & 12), and my gf, for a show at the Masquerade. The moment we arrived, I saw many of the vagrants and loiterers around. But, they never appeared dangerous or threatening. Most were really nice, wishing people well as they asked for money, even when ignored. I suppose if one has always lived in a bubble of privilege, being surrounded by the discomfort of poverty can feel intimidating.
We checked in and were offered valet parking. We were also briefed of several other parking options. I decided on valet parking, and my car was parked in front of the hotel, where someone always had eyes on it. The building itself is old, but has charm. Our room was very clean and beds were comfy. The only missing item was linens for the pullout. I went to the front desk to request. We then walked ~15 minutes to/from dinner, never once feeling unsafe. My oldest even gave her loose change to someone who came up to her asking for money. I cried, being so proud of her. If she isn't scared, why is it difficult for many adults? After the show, we walked back, no issues.
When we returned to our room, the linens had not yet arrived. I was told there were issues with the service elevator. We eventually got them. That was our only snag. All of the warnings to stay away turned out to be grossly overexaggerated. The staff were very nice and pleasant. They all seemed genuinely happy to be there, greeting you. I'm glad that I kept my booking and would stay there again!
