The Arenal Volcano National Park

Arenal Volcano National Park in Alajuela is home to Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica’s most active volcano, as well as the inactive Mount Chato, which last erupted 3,500 years ago. A range of walking trails and guided tours take visitors on a hike up to Arenal’s active lava flow area to enjoy the unforgettable views of the ever-changing landscape. The Arenal Volcano area is also home to the majestic Lake Arenal, with its incredible views of the volcano and the natural rainforest and its spectacularly diverse of flora and fauna. Make sure you experience the rainforest -- if you’re lucky you may see capuchin monkeys, the elusive quetzal bird, and even a jaguar!

Lake Arenal

Lake Arenal stretches northwest from the base of Mount Arenal, and since a hydroelectric dam project in the 70s tripled the lake’s size, it is now the largest lake in Costa Rica. Lake Arenal offers a number of hotels and a wide range of activities, from boating and kayaking to fishing. Catch a ferry from the Arenal side to the Monte Verde side or simply relax at the lake’s edge and enjoy the wonderful views: a blend of water, the natural wonder of the rainforest and the commanding presence of Mount Arenal watching over all.
