Begin your travels in this vast region with a visit to the city of Antofagasta. Stroll along the city’s charming waterfront and watch fishing boats coming and going from the wharf. At the fishing harbour, you can watch sea lions, pelicans and seabirds being fed fish from the day’s catch. Visit a local fishmonger or a seafood restaurant to try some of the catch for yourself.

Visit geological formations at La Portada Natural Monument, which is an impressive coastal cliff comprised of volcanic rocks and fossils. Explore the vast beaches of Playa Grande when you check out the nearby town of Mejillones.

Explore inland to the town of Calama to reach the gateway to Antofagasta’s remote wilderness. You can visit a vast open-cut mine, Chuquicamata, in this town. If you are up to the challenge, rent a four-wheel drive and explore the moonscape scenery of the surrounding salt flats. You can also reach Chiu-Chiu and its ruins, churches and lagoons.

Continue northeast to reach the eerie plumes of the Geyser of Tatio. Calama is an interesting stopover for travellers heading toward San Pedro de Atacama and the Atacama Desert.
