Pocket Guide: Antibes

A Chic French Resort Since the Roaring Twenties

A sunny Mediterranean climate, wide sand beaches, hotels to suit all pockets and a historic town centre make Antibes an excellent holiday destination. Situated on the Cote d’Azur, half way between Nice and Cannes, this glamourous resort has been a popular holiday destination for more than a century, made trendy by the writer Scott F. Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda, who moved to the French Riviera from New York for a quieter pace of life.

Over time the seaside resort also began to attract other writers and artists and friends of the Fitzgeralds, including Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway. Picasso in fact did many of his pieces here, while staying in the magnificent Chateau Grimaldi, which has now been turned into the Picasso Museum. Today, Antibes is still a chic Riviera resort, where cobbled streets sit side by side with old 16th-century ramparts, boutiques, restaurants, casinos and theatres.

Hotels in Antibes

Antibes has a wide range of hotels to suit all types of holidaymakers. You’ll find everything from the glamorous five-star villas favoured by celebrities attending the nearby Cannes Film Festival each year to mid-range family-friendly choices and budget options. There are hotels with swimming pools or their own private beaches, those with restaurants, and apart hotels with self-catering options. You might even choose to stay in the Fitzgerald’s old villa on the Cap d’Antibes, which is now a luxury hotel.

When not relaxing at your hotel or by the pool, you’ll find plenty to do here, from trying your luck at the Antibes casino – La Siesta – to playing a round at one of the 12 golf courses nearby. Spend your afternoons wandering around the old town and the magnificent Fort Carré, dining at one of the Juan-les-Pins restaurants with its own private beach or checking out the luxury yachts at the Port Vauban marina.

What to See and Do in and around Antibes

Antibes is not just favoured by the rich and famous; it’s also a great family getaway and has plenty of budget options. The string of pearly white beaches across the peninsula at Juan-les-Pins is part of what makes Antibes the popular holiday resort it is today. Yes, you’ll find chic private beach clubs and gourmet restaurants, but you’ll also find beaches such as Grand Plage with shallow waters, showers and changing rooms – perfect for families – or those such as La Garoupe with water sports equipment for hire. It is even said that water skiing was invented nearby, so you’ll find no better place to try it out. For a more traditional family attraction, take your kids to the Antibes Marineland theme parks, dedicated to adventure golf, kids’ rides, marine mammals and water slides. The city of Nice also lies within a half-hour drive of Antibes, so when you feel like a change of scenery, you can visit the famous art museums here or stroll around its elegant old town.
