Pocket Guide: Anguilla

The small Caribbean island nation of Anguilla might not make many international headlines but that’s just the way they like it. If you’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet, some world class relaxation in beautiful hotels and exceptional beaches, then you’d be hard pushed to find better. The sand on this UK dependency, found near Saint Martin, is so white it’s almost blinding. Dine out on delicious Caribbean food in the open air and wander clapboard shack-lined streets that have escaped the over development that has ravaged some other parts of the region. Anguilla is all about hanging out with good food and good company - all in an amazing destination.

Areas & Neighbourhoods: Where to Stay in Anguilla

The Valley - The official capital of the island and place where colourful clapboard houses keep the real traditional feel. But also expect some upmarket restaurants and hotel options.

Meads Bay - One of the island’s most popular beaches, stretching for more than a mile along the western side of the island. This is where you can find some of the best hotels in the Caribbean.

West End Village - This small settlement is perhaps the archetypal Caribbean fishing village, with palm trees, weather beaten shacks and an almost impossibly relaxed vibe.

Island Harbour - Another of the island’s quaint and charming fishing villages, home to several generations of fisherman who have seen no reason to leave paradise.

Things to See with a Hotel in Anguilla

If you’re looking for pristine, sweeping bays, white sand and bright turquoise water, then Anguilla will not disappoint. Spend lazy days sunbathing on a choice of picture postcard beaches, including Shoal bay, Barnes and Rendezvous. Nature lovers can head to a number of spots on the island from April to November to see a variety of turtle species laying their eggs. Visit the Old Salt Factory and Pumphouse, one of the key historical sites on the island or climb Crocus Hill for the best view. But in all honesty, on Anguilla it’s not so much about seeing, as just taking it all in. There’s no rush, no traffic and little noise - just relaxation.

Things to Do When You Stay in an Anguilla Hotel

Take a fishing boat out on the water and try and land the catch of the day or snorkel and swim in the reef at Shoal Bay. Learn to dive or visit the Endangered Species Garden. If you’re feeling energetic, go for a hike around some of the island’s trails, or climb on horseback and explore. There’s a choice of golf courses and a number of festivals throughout the summer season, including the Tranquility Jazz festival. Or you can even get your groove on at some of the island’s beach bars - there’s plenty to choose from at various spots along the coast.
