Pocket Guide: Amsterdam

Hotels @ Amsterdam

With a countless number of canals and more bridges than Paris, it is easy to understand why Amsterdam goes by the alter ego ‘Venice of the north’. The Dutch capital is world famous, pulling in the crowds eager to explore its unique canals, Red Light District, world renowned museums, numerous coffee shops and experience its overall party atmosphere.

On Expedia.co.uk we have hundreds of Amsterdam accommodation to choose from, ranging from budget one or two star hostels to grand five star hotels. Simply use the search function or filters on the page to find the right hotel for you.

Amsterdam’s Top Hotspots

Dam Square is the historic heart of the city, and it’s here that you will popular tourist attractions like the Palace on Dam Square, the Nieuwe Kerk, the National Monument and Madame Tussauds. It’s also just a few minutes’ walk from Amsterdam Central Station, making it a very convenient place to stay. It’s also just a stone’s throw away from Amsterdam’s most visited neighbourhood: the Red Light District.

Canals and Culture

The canals, hailing from the 17th Century, have been on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List since 2010. But these are not the only cultural and historical delights. No trip to Amsterdam would be complete without a trip to the Van Gough Museum, and the heart-wrenching story of the Anne Frank House should not be missed, nor forgotten, either. There’s also the Vondelpark: the most famous and most visited park in Amsterdam.

<h3 >De Pijp

De Pijp is a great neighbourhood away from the busy city centre, famed for its bars, cafés and restaurants. Originally a poor, working-class neighbourhood, it’s gone through major regeneration to become of the city’s premier hipster areas. It’s also a great place for shopping, containing the biggest, oldest and most famous market of the Netherlands: the Albert Cuypmarkt. Other sights around here include are the former Heineken Brewery, diamond company Asscher and the Sarphatipark. For a top-notch night on the town, be sure to check out Marie Heinekenplein, Gerard Douplein and the Frans Halsstraat.

Amsterdam is loved by both locals and visitors for the enormous amount of shops. A few favoured locations include the Kalverstraat (the busiest street of the Netherlands), Nieuwendijk, Leidsestraat, Utrechtsestraat, Haarlemmerbuurt, The 9 Streets and Magna Plaza. The exclusive P.C. Hooftstraat is one of the most expensive shopping streets in the Netherlands.
