Dramatic cliffs, scenic bays and a host of cultural attractions make Amorgos Island in the Eastern Cyclades a unique holiday destination. Steeped in ancient history and traditions and boasting some of the most picturesque villages in the Cyclades, there’s plenty to see and do on this beautiful Greek Island.
Chora, the main town, has, among others, the smallest church in Greece, Agios Fanourios. There’s also a 13th-century castle to explore, traditional coffee shops and tavernas to enjoy, and everywhere you look, charming Cycladic buildings, pretty squares and spectacular views.
The monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa is just over a mile to the north east of Chora. Standing on a clifftop that plunges into the sea from almost a thousand feet, this Byzantine treasure is breathtaking. Climb 300 steps to visit the monks who’ve inhabited the monastery for hundreds of years.
Agia Anna is one of the most popular beaches on Amorgos Island. With its crystal-clear waters and spectacular surrounding landscape, it’s no wonder Luc Besson chose Amargos as the main setting for his film The Big Blue. Other stunning beaches on the island include Mourou beach near Arkesini, Agios Pavlos beach, Aegali beach and Maltezi beach.
A network of paths crosses Amorgos Island and with so much beautiful scenery to take in, there are some great hikes to enjoy on the island. If you prefer staying close to the beach, you can also enjoy some spectacular scuba diving and snorkelling in the Aegean Sea.
Aegiali is Amorgos Island’s second port and has plenty of history as well as the convenience of a beautiful beach. Visit the citadel of ancient Aegiali, one of the three ancient cities on Amorgos Island. On Aegiali beach, you’ll find the luxury of five-star accommodation with restaurants, spa and an indoor pool.
There’s also a good range of two- and three-star hotels near Aegiali beach. All offer plenty of family-friendly facilities from children’s pools to outdoor activities. You can also find three-star accommodation in Tholaria within a mile of Aegiali beach.
There’s the option of three-star accommodation near the ferry terminal in Katapola, the island’s main port – perfect for island hopping with so many places to visit in the Cyclades. There are also aparthotels on Agios Pavlos beach and a little further afield near Mourou beach.
The hotels on Amorgos Island offer a good range of amenities with outdoor pools, gardens, furnished balconies and plenty of family-friendly facilities. You can also stay on nearby islands if you’re looking for more choice of accommodation.
There’s an excellent range of hotels on Amorgos Island where you can enjoy complete five-star luxury or more basic but beautiful two-star budget hotels. Wherever you stay on Amorgos Island, you’re never far from a stunning beach and magnificent views on this gem of an island.
