Alagoas is an intriguing state with quaint historic villages, picturesque beach towns and a cultured and scenic capital city. Its year-round tropical climate makes for ideal swimming and snorkeling conditions. Make your way up the Atlantic Coast to reach the many beaches and fishing hamlets of the state.

For a glimpse into the local culture, head to the capital of Maceió. Among its most interesting attractions is the Handicraft Fair in the Pajucara district. Browse the colourful clothes and trinkets of this eclectic market. Gaze up at the twin towers that flank the enormous Cathedral Metropolitana of Maceió. Attend an event at the Ruth Cardoso Exposition and Cultural Centre and see a show at the Deodoro Theatre, which has an exceptional façade featuring a mix of architectural styles.

Work on your tan December through March in Maceió at Jacarecica Beach, Jatiuca Beach and Pajucara Beach. The main strip is the Ponta Verde Beach, backed by lavish hotels and palm trees. Many of the most stunning and serene stretches of sand are in the northeastern outskirts of the city, including the Costa Brava Beach, the Garca Torta Beach and the Ipioca Beach.

Visit other beach towns in the state, including Barra de Santo Antonio, Barra de São Miguel and Maragogi. Go scuba diving in the reefs of Pontal de Coruripe.

For a change of scenery, travel inland to the historic riverside village of Piranhas. Enjoy stunning views of the valley from the Piranhas Town Overlook and visit the Sertão Museum in an old railway building. It contains regional relics from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The state occupies a relatively small region in the northeastern part of Brazil. Fly to the Zumbi dos Palmares International Airport just outside of Maceió and get around the state by car. The airport, which is named after a national hero, is an attraction in itself, comprising an elegant façade of metal, granite and glass.

Alagoas has historic villages, stunning beaches and a rich tapestry of history.
