Pocket Guide: Adriatic Coast - Karst

Seaside fishing villages, thermal spas and some of the longest days of sunshine around make Slovenia’s tiny stretch of Adriatic Coast a charming sea-and-sun destination, but its real beauty is out of sight, in the Karst region’s impressive network of underground caves.

Find Adriatic Coast and Karst Region Hotels

Unspoiled beaches, laid-back fishing villages and historical Venetian architecture are among the big lures of Slovenia’s olive-grove and vineyard-strewn Karst region. But the real draw of this part of Adriatic coastline is what lies beneath it. ‘Karst’ refers to the limestone plateau on which this area sits, and the porous surface has swallowed whole rivers underground, creating new landscapes beneath the surface.

Explore the Caves of the Karst Region

Dozens of cavernous underground worlds are open for you to explore here, including the Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has a canyon measuring nearly 500 feet in depth. You will also find the country’s most famous cavern in the Karst region. The enormous Postojna Cave has drawn in the crowds since 1819, making it one of the oldest tourist caves in Europe. It is as popular as ever today, with visitors coming in their droves to ride the underground railway and see its vast and unique rock formations.

Discover Salt Flats on the Adriatic Coast

For a relaxing getaway in the Adriatic Coast and Karst region, make a beeline for the cluster of stylish spa hotels in Portorož. This charming seaside town is a great place to go for a spa or wellness break, specialising in salt scrubs and mud treatments using natural ingredients sourced from the traditional salt flats at Sečovlje Salina Nature Park.

Still producing salt using the original Medieval method, the 700-year-old salt works is an important heritage site and one of the last surviving of its kind. Big chunks of it have morphed into rich ecological sites over the centuries, with wetlands full of lizards and bats plus more than 250 different bird species that thrive in the salty conditions.

There are walking and cycling trails throughout the park if you want to explore, as well as a heritage museum and open-air exhibition of sculptures. In addition to having the salt flats and surrounding parkland on their doorstep, hotels in Portorož put the town’s warm sea waters and café- and bar-lined sands within easy reach.

Hotels close to Karst’s Unspoiled Beaches

The Adriatic Coast and Karst region’s salt-making heritage is also clear in the fishing village of Strunjan, which happens to be home to the smallest saltpans in the Adriatic. There is a wide range of accommodation in Strunjan, from budget hotels in the centre of town to upmarket waterside apartments, so all pockets are catered for. The village is part of a large nature reserve of the same name that is known for its long days of sunshine and the unspoiled sands it offers beachgoers. Stretching more than two miles from the village to the cliff-edge coastline, the park is home to a wealth of flora and fauna.
