Pocket Guide: Capo Molini Aci Trezza Hotels

Created in the 18th-century, the colourful resort of Aci Trezza is a favourite summertime playground of Italian holidaymakers. As it’s only a short drive from Catania, it’s a popular choice for locals in search of a beach holiday. And if you visit in late-June, you can join the festivities for St. John the Baptist, you can see why, when everyone feasts on locally caught swordfish.

What to See in Aci Trezza

Aci Trezza is more than just a pretty beach resort. Standing guard in the sea in front of the village are eight volcanic stacks called faraglioni, along with several small islands. Nicknamed the Islands of the Cyclops in reference to Homer’s Odyssey, they’re said to be the giant rocks that the angry Cyclops Polyphemus threw at the fleeing Odysseus. The seas around these faraglioni have become a protected marine area, and the giant stacks look even more impressive at sunset.

Hop on one of the small rental boats and take a tour of the islands. If you’ve got the stamina, you could hire a paddle board and get even closer.

Where to Stay in Aci Trezza

You’re never far from the sea if you book an Aci Trezza hotel. With terraces offering sublime views of the sea, some places to stay are very close to the waterfront, making it very easy to reach the little village harbour and the beach. Or you could head to the village’s hilly interior to stay in intimate B&Bs that offer sweeping vistas from their outdoor pools.

Aci Trezza’s Beach

You won’t find sandy beaches in Aci Trezza, but that doesn’t stop people from making the most of the sea. Beach bars and restaurants have built large terraces on stilts, so you can just walk down the ladder and dive straight into the water. Other parts of the beach are pebbly and rocky, but wonderfully relaxing if you’re wearing swimming shoes.

Just beside the beach is an attractive little harbour filled with fishing boats and pleasure craft. It’s also where you can find small boats to rent for excursions out to the islands.
