"Excellent - not for the modern hotel addicted"
Edinburgh for Hogmanay (New Years). Arrived at EDI airport. Into town via Airlink bus service (Tram service now available since last trip). Treked up the hill to the old town - Stay Edinburgh office a bit obscure, but easy to find using directions and a good map. Check-in very cordial and efficient. Treked further up the Royal Mile to Ladys Step Close, then around the back to a turret staircase entrance. Quite a climb up three levels to the room. Apartment was small but had all amenities for a comfortable stay - TV, wifi, refrigerator, microwave, teakettle, washing machine, cooktop, pots, pans, dishware, untensils, etc. Location superb - windows fronting on the Royal Mile and a short walk uphill to the castle. (aside - strong legs required as old town Edinburgh is up and down with few level stretches) Excellent food available everywhere - contrary to preconceptions, haggis is a delicious fare. Many museums and interesting sites and activities within easy(?) walking distance. Prolific shopping available locally and down in new town area. Hogmanay was an excellent and well run celebration akin in many ways to a New Orleans Mardi Gras. Location provided services essential to enjoyment - Royal Mile pub open to 3am, a "chippie" on the Royal Mile open to 4am and a club on the backside of the hill open until 5am. Checkout at 10am, but the office will hold bags until required departure for the airport - plenty of time for last day tourism and shopping. Fantastic stay.
