If it’s a four star hotel you’re after in Northern Ireland, then Derry, sometimes referred to as Londonderry, is the very place. Seek and you shall find! In particular, if you cast an eye along the quays along the west bank of the River Foyle, you won’t be disappointed.
Close to the very heart of the city, within walking distance of many of the attractions, such as a range of museums, the Bloody Sunday Memorial and Derry City Wall, there are some excellent four star hotels, with beautiful views over the river. In one, for example, every room has free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with cable channels and 24-hour room service too. The hotel has an indoor pool, spa tub and fitness centre on site, as well as a restaurant, a coffee shop and a bar to cater for all your eating and drinking requirements.
On the other side of the river, a little further out from the centre, and therefore perhaps more peaceful, there’s another
four star hotel adjacent to a golf course. This is a perfect blend of city and leisure activities all on the doorstep - not to mention a nearby aquarium, where you can watch a huge variety of marine life swimming about in the tanks and learn about the local wildlife in the visitors’ centre.
Further out of the city centre, you might choose a tastefully restored Georgian country house hotel, set in tranquil grounds with its own cycle and hiking trails. There is the opportunity to hire out horses or mountain bikes on site, as well as countless outdoor pursuits nearby, such as skydiving and kayaking for thrill-seekers or golf for those for whom a gentler approach to life is preferable.
The road infrastructure around Derry is good, so even staying 20 or 30 miles away doesn’t prevent you from making the most of the city amenities, although your own car, or a hire car, would be useful in this circumstance. There are plenty of four star hotels within striking distance, including one with its own golf course and full-service spa.
If you’re planning to visit Northern Ireland, Derry is a perfect base, and one of its many hotels will offer you a relaxing place to enjoy a good dinner in amenable surroundings and lay your head after outings enjoying the city’s historical heritage, shopping ‘til you’re ready to drop or playing a round of golf on one of the nearby courses.
