Pocket Guide: 4 Stars Hotels in Gdańsk
Gdansk’s main town has range of stylish four-star hotels with attractive Baroque facades and pretty restaurant terraces within easy reach of Gdansk’s major sights. Booking a four-star hotel along Gdansk’s rejuvenated waterfront, you’ll have full-service spas and views of the river. Or you could choose a four-star hotel in one of its Gdansk beachfront suburbs.
Where to Go Shopping in Gdansk
Thanks to Gdansk’s position on the ancient amber route from Russia to Venice, you’ll be spoilt for choice among the countless boutiques and stalls selling amber jewellery. The city is also part of the Kashubian region, which has a rich tradition in handicrafts. Pick up some of the chunky regional pottery or delicately embroidered linens. And if you want a collection of international and local brands under one roof, check out the 100-plus shops in the Madison Shopping Gallery near the main railway station.
Eating in Gdansk
Both Pomeranian and Kashubian cuisine feature prominently in Gdansk’s restaurants. Look forward to anything from delicious roast duck, pork and goose to fresh fish from the Baltic Sea. Head to the main town for elegant restaurants serving refined versions of regional dishes. There’s a good selection of international restaurants, too, some pushing the boundaries of innovative cooking. And don’t leave Gdansk without trying its local potent vodka, Goldwasser.
Gdansk for Culture Lovers
Gdansk’s cultural scene is a particularly lively one. There’s a full programme of classical concerts and music festivals at the Baltic Philharmonic Hall, and the State Baltic Opera Theatre stages not only opera but also ballet and concerts. Fans of modern art should visit the Modern Art Gallery in the refined suburb of Oliwa.
If you’re in Gdansk in late July and early August, you’ll be in time for its biggest festival of the year. The Dominican Fair takes over the city for three weeks, filling the streets with street performances, food stalls, outdoor concerts and antiques and bric-a-brac sellers. Apart from a 33-year break after the Second World War, the fair has been going since 1260.
