Pocket Guide: 3 Stars Hotels in Holywell
Holywell is a small market town in Flintshire, close to the North Wales coast and to the west of the River Dee estuary. In years gone by it was a hotbed for lead mining and cotton production, and though these heavy industries have moved on, their legacy remains in a plethora of richly impressive Georgian architecture. There are more than 60 listed buildings in the centre of Holywell, and over 100 of the kind of small, locally owned shops that are usually all too hard to find.
Although visitors to Holywell are bound to end up exploring the town and enjoying its landmarks, shops, pubs and attractions, there’s a reasonable chance that what attracted them in the first place was the location. The A548 coast road runs past the northern edge of the town and offers easy access to the rest of the Welsh coast, including such tourist hot spots as Prestatyn, Rhyl and Colwyn Bay.
Accommodation in Holywell
Selecting Holywell as your base from which to explore Wales is made simpler by the presence of accommodation running from simple guesthouses to a three star hotel and health club. The presence of a full service spa and fitness centre means that three star accommodation in Holywell amounts to much more than simply a base, offering the chance to relax and pamper yourself at the same time as taking advantage of your surroundings.Attractions Around Holywell
Strong transport links mean that a three star hotel in Holywell represents a gateway to the rest of Wales. Head north and you’ll soon hit miles of coast, while driving south out of town will soon find you heading into the mountains, hills, forests and lakesides of the Welsh interior.
Activities Around Holywell
Those keen on getting out and about in the clean Welsh air will be particularly well served by a stay in a three star Holywell hotel. There are no fewer than four golf courses within easy travelling distance, including Holywell Golf Course itself, and anglers are equally well served, with a choice of six stillwater trout or coarse fisheries and the chance to go sea fishing in the Dee Estuary.
Landmarks in the Vicinity
It is possible, within just a few miles of the centre of Holywell, to find several distinctive and fascinating monuments and building that have been preserved for the modern visitor to enjoy and (sometimes) puzzle over.
The Coed y Garreg Watchtower is located on the top of a hill in woods three miles to the west of Holywell. The round stone structure is believed by some to be a type of lighthouse constructed by the Romans, whilst others think it is a 17th century vantage point looking out for pirate raids along the Dee Estuary. Attempting to puzzle out the truth is part of the fun, after you’ve enjoyed the scenic walk up to the tower.
Another puzzling monument is Maen Achwyfan, a 12-foot high stone monolith located near the village of Whitford, three miles from Holywell. Although no one is certain why it was erected, what all the experts can agree on is that it is probably the tallest of its type in Britain and has been standing since around 1000 AD.
