"Convenient hostel close to everything in Old Town"
My family of four needed a place to stay in Edinburgh that was close to everything because our time in town was very limited. The hotels were very expensive and we were not going to be spending much time in the room regardless. I found this hostel via Expedia and, having stayed in hostels before, went ahead and booked when I found that I could get a four person room to ourselves. This was a bit cramped but it gave us our own space and our own bathroom. It was more than enough for what we needed. The staff were super friendly and helpful. It's a hostel aimed at younger folks and is well used, so keep that in mind. You are on your own for most everything but if you're cool with that then this is an ideal place to stay.

"Please remember: they're dorms."
Went there for the Edinburgh Fringe, and these dorms made into a hostel for the summer are perfect for that. The rooms are bunched into sections that share a bathroom and full kitchen, and those sections take bigger sections of a couple different buildings on opposite sides of a street in the middle of everything. (It can all seem pretty maze-like at first.) In part, that means lots of noise from the streets - especially during Fringe and other festivals - but I was doing so much running around during the day, I was so exhausted coming back and slept like a rock. It was great to go to shops and pick up some food, then have it all in the large fridge to cook up in the morning and when I'd get back - a big $ saver when you don't want to pay to eat out every night. Everything is very simple and bare-bones (you even pay a pound for a towel), but the folks at the front desk are really nice, and even during the busiest times, the traffic with other guests is minimal. For what it is, it's really good. Just don't expect a hotel.

"Typical hostel, great location"
I picked High Street Hostel for the price and was not disappointed. It's a very typical sort of hostel stay; nothing special but certainly nothing awful. The floors could have been better kept especially considering how religiously they clean them. I happened to be in Edinburgh for Fringe, and since I didn't know anything about Scotland, I didn't pay any attention to the hostel's location. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I found it was right in the middle of everything, as it is located just off the High Street/Royal Mile. Even outside of Fringe there is plenty to do within walking distance - many varieties of restaurant, venues and attractions like the Edinburgh Castle, and beaucoup souvenir shops. On the one hand I'm sorry I didn't see more of Edinburgh during my three days there, but on the other hand, everything was just so convenient!

Pocket Guide: Edinburgh Old Town 2 stars Hotels

With narrow, winding streets and alleys, this mediaeval district is a contrast to New Town. Acting as the main artery, the Royal Mile begins at Edinburgh Castle and ends at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Royal Family’s residence. Many tourist attractions are found in Old Town including the National Galleries, Royal Museum, and St. Giles Cathedral.
