Pocket Guide: Dorset Lyme Regis Hotels

The small and unassuming Dorset town of Lyme Regis has recently been awarded World Heritage Coast status and is probably most famous for its fossil-strewn beach. However, if one part of Lyme Regis seems a little familiar, it's probably because you've seen it on the silver screen: the distinctive sea wall, known locally as 'The Cobb' is the stretch of stone from which Meryl Streep gazed out to sea in the iconic scene from The French Lieutenant's Woman. However, there's more to Lyme Regis than ammonites and Oscar-winning actresses! There's plenty of accommodation too, ranging from characterful inns to upmarket B&Bs - accommodation that's sure to make your visit a memorable one.

The Pearl of the Jurassic Coast: Hotels in Lyme Regis

A small, seaside town, Lyme Regis wears its history on its picturesque sleeve. The famous beach is strewn with fossils and attracts amateur and professional archaeologists alike, each hoping for the next 'Big Find'! With so much of the past to hand, there are plenty of museums, such as Dinosaurland Fossil Museum and the Lyme Regis Marine Museum. Most Lyme Regis hotels and B&Bs are within easy reach of an attraction or two; the Kersbrook Hotel is just 15 minutes from the Marine Theatre, where visitors can catch a music concert, enjoy some comedy or even take in a play.

    Fresh Fish and Quirky Shops

With the sea on Lyme Regis' doorstep, it should come as no surprise that there are a number of seafood restaurants in the town. Perhaps the most famous of these is the Hix Oyster & Fish House, run by renowned chef Mark Hix. However, it's worth remembering that some hotels, such as the Cobb Arms, boast their own restaurants too, serving excellent, locally-sourced food. In addition to being family-friendly, the Cobb Arms is also pet-friendly and one of the few establishments where you can bring your four-legged buddy along with you.

Lyme Regis is a haven for bargain-hunters, with a wide selection of quirky, independent shops. In addition to the usual tourist shops, you'll find everything from cheesemongers to vintage clothes specialists. However, if you want upmarket stores, Dorchester is just a short drive away.

A superb destination at any time of year, there's a good range of accommodation for those who want to make the most of their visit to this stunning town.
