Monarch Hotel

1015 Geary St, San Francisco - Map

"Cheap 'n' cheerful hotel, "interesting" area"
The Monarch is at the edge of the Tenderloin and across the street from a community assistance centre, so you'll be sharing street space with some interesting neighbours who occasionally make a bit of a racket but seem fairly harmless. I was by myself, so I didn't go out late at night, not even to the AMC Van Ness 14 movie theatre conveniently located in the same block as the Monach. However, I had no problems walking up and down the hill from the Civic Center BART, even around 8-ish at night. In fact, most of the people I met on the #19 and #38/#38R buses were quite friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is fairly inexpensive, especially for SF, and very clean -- and it's a lot nicer than many lower-priced hotels I've stayed at in SF and other cities. There are some excellent places to eat nearby, including House of Thai on Geary and Larkin ($14 for delicious yum nua and Thai ice coffee), Brenda's French Soul Food at Polk and Eddy (go around 1:30 or 2 on a weekday and you won't have to wait), and Mel's Diner (terrific breakfasts).

"Good price for being in town."
The hotel was going through a major renovation. Too noisy to sleep in. Some homeless were near front door, but the fob kept them from coming inside. Breakfast was convenient, and fun meeting all the different people from all over.

The hotel was full, didn't like the first floor room, Second day the staff Ms. Gloriamarie Gallagher was able to provide a room in 2nd floor, She is very nice. The parking is free but limited. Finding a street parking is difficult. Restaurants are within walking distance. Very close to all attractions. will stay again.

"Stayed in San Francisco for a week of touring."
I (age 63) and my daughter (age 42) stayed at this hotel for 7 nights. Sunday to Sunday. The folks at this hotel were very nice and accomodating. The room was extremely comfortable, clean and well kept. The king bed was quite comfortable and the shower was wonderful with plenty of water pressure and hot water. They have their own parking lot which was free. There was a kurig coffee pot, hair dryer, iron and ironing board in the room. The building was similar to a two story motel with outside entrances on all the rooms. Traffic was not too terribly noisy, I wore ear plugs while sleeping. We were on the second floor. The neighborhood is really close to main Market Street Hub. There were lots of homeless folks and the next block over had the WIC office and support facilities for the homeless. However, during the day, we did not feel unsafe and there were plenty of non-homeless people around as well. This is an Asian neighborhood, mainly Thai. We were within 1 block of Van Ness, and there were bus stops within 1 to 2 blocks of the hotel, so we did not have to do much walking to get anywhere, unless we wanted to. I would definitely stay here again.
