We loved that it was in town and close to everything. Free parking was a bonus, but don't take a big car! The breakfast is simple: coffee, hot chocolate, tea, fruit, packaged pastries, and yogurt. The rooms are upgraded, clean and modern. I loved the long desk area and office chair. Another bonus was a multiplug at the desk making it easy to charge cell phones and work with computer. As someone else noted, the beds are a little stiff, and the pillows - one is not enough and two are too much. But the room was clean, comfortable, and contained everything we needed. Something else I liked was that the hotel was not too large. It was a short distance from the parking garage to the rooms and there is an elevator. Easy access.
It"s and old motel but very clean, comfortable. It can be a bit noisy because of the restaurant bar just across the pool. The motel does provide ear plugs. It has free parking well worth any inconvenience with noise. Its located close to what ever you are looking for in down town San Francisco. Taxis are plentiful and you can go just about anywhere in the down town area for under $20.00. The hotel is safe although the surrounding area can be scary, (lots of homeless folks).
My wife and I are in our 60's and we would not hesitate to stay here again.
Ended up at at the Monarch during a 5-day Conference when I could not find another option.
Overall a very pleasant (and surprising) experience. Highly recommend for those on a budget.
Clean rooms, helpful staff, good beds. Convenient location. For a 2-star hotel, and the price, I rate it as very good.
Regarding some negative comments (which worried me): I had no noise or vagrant issues at all. There was a strong smell of disinfectant as I walked in the lobby late near 11 PM. It was NOT urine as another writer suggested ( I work in a Hospital and known those smells). The elevator was slow, as are most older-elevators throughout San Francisco.
The room was clean and neat. The person at the desk could not really help explain how the showers worked. When I tried it like he said the turn to the right actually had the spray coming out the from as opposed to from the top.
Parking isn't the greatest so arrive early if you want free parking, otherwise you're forced to park on the street at your own risk. It's in the middle of everything so it's a great location for tourists. Would stay again
