You can’t visit San Sebastian without spending time on its long, sheltered beach – whatever the time of year. Playa de la Concha has soft sands and bathing platforms moored further out in the bay.
Head out from your one-star hotel to join the locals in a leisurely saunter along the wide promenade, past grand hotels and cafes. Hop on the ferry that goes out to Isla de Santa Clara, a rocky little island that has its own beach with great views back to San Sebastian.
Explore the narrow streets of Casco Viejo, San Sebastian’s attractive old town. Soak up the lively vibe in the main square, Plaza de la Constitución, which used to be a bullring and now is the centre of the many festivals that take place in San Sebastian.
You don’t have to go far to find one-star hotels and family-run pensions in San Sebastian. There’s a good choice of budget accommodation in Casco Viejo and within a short walk of Playa de la Concha. If you want to go further afield, try some of the one-star hotels in the Basque countryside or closer to the French border, by San Sebastian Airport.
San Sebastian is renowned for its pintxos, the Basque version of tapas. From your one-star hotel, you’ll be near numerous bars in Casco Viejo where you can choose from a huge selection of pintxos that make the most of local seafood and air-dried hams.
Enjoy the atmosphere and join locals crowding into rustic bars with counters loaded with freshly made plates of pintxos. You can even make a meal of them, as they’re a cheap alternative to a sit-down dinner. Afterwards, hit the beach nightclubs that go on till the early morning before heading back to your one-star hotel in San Sebastian.
