The Spinnaker Bar
With contemporary nautical decor, marina views and affable bar staff, this is the capital’s most successful regular Friday night venue where young professionals meet to unwind on the local Phoenix Beer, mind-blowing rum cocktails and loud music. Get there for Happy Hour (5pm to 9pm) and enjoy free nibbles and half price drinks or stay until late and party on the waterfront terrace.
L’Aventure du Sucre
This former working sugar factory is now a fascinating museum. It is the only place in Mauritius where you can learn about every aspect of the history of sugar and its impact on the economic and social development of the nation. Put aside at least half a day and finish off with tastings of speciality sugars in the adjacent Village Boutik.
Ile aux Cerfs
Honeymooners, empty nesters and kids particularly enjoy the tropical ambience of this offshore island for water sports and boating. Tour operators can arrange trips from here to Mauritius’ longest river, Grand River South East and its impressive waterfalls. The challenging 18-hole golf course on the island is off-limits to casual visitors but there are plenty of quiet walks and secluded beaches to explore.
