Costa del Sol
Though it’s already overflowing with tourists and built up beyond redemption, Spain’s most notorious costa still pulls in the crowds. On first impressions it might seem nothing more than a monotonous sprawl of development, but the coastal strip contains a surprising amount of diversity, and in the city of Málaga – birthplace of Pablo Picasso – something quintessentially Spanish and not to be overlooked on your way out of the airport.

Museo Picasso, Málaga
Since opening in October 2003, this new museum has brought the city revenue and a new standing. The gallery itself, converted from the sumptuous early 16th-century Palacio de los Condes de Buenavista, is a superb space, however, it is the art that will draw most people. The museum’s permanent collection boasts 204 original works, including oil paintings, sculptures, drawings, sketchpads and ceramics.
La Casa del Angel
This remarkable restaurant-gallery is owned by the Spanish comedian Angel Caró. Its cuisine combines Grandma’s home cooking with the region’s Arabic heritage – with delicious results. The gallery showcases an extraordinary collection of over 100 works from the 16th century to the present day, including pieces by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. If you’re not eating, it costs just €3 (which includes a drink) for a look around.
Benalmádena
Merging into Torremolinos is Benalmádena Costa. The main attractions here are the Puerto Deportivo,
the Costa’s most happening nightspot, particularly popular among young Spaniards from Málaga, and a cable car (+34 952 57 77 73, tickets €12, €8 concessions) that lifts you up into the hills, leaving you free to hike your way down on two well-marked paths. Benalmádena Pueblo is an unexpectedly pretty village above the conurbation.
