Family holidays in Malta

  • Malta Family holidays

The beautiful island of Malta is almost universally adored by everyone who visits it, and thanks to the fact that English is the island's first language, cheap family holidays on Malta are an easy option if you don't want to take your children somewhere where they can't communicate directly with the local residents. The island uses the single currency of the euro, too, which may be more familiar to you if you have taken previous holidays together as a family anywhere in continental Europe - the currency until 2008 was often referred to as the 'pound' by British visitors, although it was technically called the Maltese lira.

    Fortified Valletta

While many people visit Malta for the beaches, the island's capital city of Valletta is also a huge attraction during family holidays on Malta, and its ramparts and fortifications are an indication of its military significance in days gone by. In the modern era this role is not so significant, but the impressive walls still make for great photo opportunities, and may keep the kids fascinated too, especially if they are used to seeing walled cities in fantasy movies but have never seen such a fine example in real life.

    A trip to Sweethaven

Sweethaven is the fictional setting for the live action film version of Popeye, made in the 1980s and starring Robin Williams. However, the village used in the filming was not fictional in the sense that it was built from scratch especially for the movie, and largely remains standing to this day. You can visit the set - which has been transformed into a mini theme park paying homage to Popeye - and see the pretty little bay exactly as it was several decades ago when the film was made.

    Central Mediterranean weather

Malta has a roughly central location in the Mediterranean Sea, and one of the steadiest climates in the region too. Summer reaches up to just below 30°C, and may tip beyond the 30°C mark on the hottest days. Even more impressive are the winter temperatures, as it usually won't drop much below 15°C, and this is in comparison to a time of year when UK weather is likely to be well below freezing, making family holidays in Malta a great winter sun option if you just want an off-season escape from icy England.

Why Malta is so great for families

The Maltese adore kids and always go out of their way to ensure that younger visitors are kept just as happy as grownups. Family holidays in Malta usually involve plenty of time on the island's stunning beaches and at least one day trip to the magnificent walled capital city of Valletta. Couple all of this with a pleasant Mediterranean climate and Malta's famously laid-back approach to life and it's easy for even the most frazzled of families to shed their worries and unwind in this glorious destination.
