Set out to explore the incredible archaeological site at Chichen Itza – one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Marvel at its temples, ruins and remnants of the Maya who lived here more than 1,500 years ago.
After being picked up from your hotel, wind through the jungle toward Chichen Itza, one of the largest Maya cities and an expansive archaeological site with a dense core of 1.9 square miles (5 sq km). Admire the complex of pyramids, interconnected pathways and temples as your guide explains the culture of this once-great city's inhabitants.
At the Great Ball Court, step onto the field where the ancient game was played as part of a ritual involving human sacrifice. Next, peer into the clear waters of the Cenote Sagrado (Sacred Cenote), a deep, freshwater sinkhole where artefacts and individuals were sacrificed to the rain god during times of drought.
Gaze up at the majestic El Castillo, a towering pyramid that was dedicated to the Maya feathered serpent god Kukulkan. On equinoxes, the sun casts a shadow on this structure that appears to be a serpent snaking its way down the pyramid's staircase.
Walk the grounds to see the site's other impressive structures and then head to a local restaurant for a buffet lunch of Mexican specialities before your return to Merida.
