E-tickets

What are e-tickets and why should I use them?

Electronic tickets or e-tickets, are now offered by the majority of airlines. An e-ticket confirms your airline ticket purchase without requiring a paper record, the only record of an e-ticket sale is in electronic form in the airline's computer system.
E-tickets offer the following advantages:

  • They allow you to travel without a paper ticket, eliminating the worry of leaving your tickets behind.
  • You do not have to wait for your tickets to arrive.
  • E-ticket numbers can be used at self service check in desks, now offered by some airlines to avoid queuing at check-in desks. These machines use simple touch screen commands and they will print your boarding pass and track air miles automatically. At machine check-in you are required to enter either of the 3 following methods of identification:

    1. The credit card that the airline ticket was purchased with
    2. A traveller loyalty card or
    3. An e-ticket card. Please note the card number must have been given at the time the booking was made.

When you buy e-tickets through Expedia.co.uk, you'll receive a confirmation of your purchase via email.

On what airlines can I purchase e-tickets?

E-tickets are currently available on British Airways, British Midland, American Airlines, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, SAS, US Airways, KLM.

In order to qualify for e-tickets, all segments of your trip must be flown on the same airline. While all of these airlines offer this service, e-tickets may not be available for every flight.

This list will be updated as e-tickets become available on more airlines.

How do I travel with an e-ticket?

When you check in for your flight, give the ticket agent your name, flight number, and official photo identification. For example, your passport. For your protection, airlines also require that you show the credit card used to purchase your ticket.

If your ticket was purchased for you by someone else, you will need to check in at a check in desk, and will be required to show official photo identification for yourself.

Adults and children can travel using e-tickets, however infants (Under 2 years old) cannot.

How will I know I have a confirmed reservation and a seat assignment?

The email you receive when you purchase your e-ticket includes your purchase confirmation number. This confirmation number is on record with both Expedia.co.uk and the airline. If you have a confirmation number, your reservation is confirmed.

The confirmation number is also listed in the itinerary Expedia.co.uk saves for you online. To view your itinerary, click the "My Trips" link anywhere on the site. Sign in as usual. You'll see a list of all the itineraries we have stored for you. You'll find the confirmation number for your flight in the flight portion of your itinerary. Each itinerary is saved until your trip is over.

To be sure you have a seat assignment, arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight's departure and check in promptly. Whether you use a paper ticket or an e-ticket, early check-in is necessary.

We strongly recommend that you print out your flight confirmation email and take it to the airport with you.

What should I do if I need a paper receipt?

If you need a paper receipt for your purchase, a printout of your itinerary may be sufficient. On the itinerary page, simply click the Show printable itinerary link in the Itinerary options table, and print your itinerary from this view. You may also ask for a printed receipt when you check in for your flight.
