Gem of a Hotel

The Golden Wheel Hotel was such a delight! It is perfectly located- right below Prague Castle ( about 5 minutes walk) on a charming street lined with colorful buildings and great architecture. Another 10 minute walk and you’re at the Charles Bridge and on your way to the Old Town Square. My room was spacious and clean, and the bathroom had a great soaking tub and even a heated towel rack! The included breakfast buffet every morning was one of the best I’ve had in any of my many stays in Europe. Another rave for the staff, who were always genuinely friendly and helpful, and made us feel extremely welcome. This hotel is a gem and I would highly recommend it!

Wonderful former palace

I loved, loved, loved my stay in this hotel! I would love to go back sometime. My room was very clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Everyone spoke English. The hotel is conveniently located. I always felt safe walking alone in the area. It just doesn’t get any better than staying in a 500 year old former palace.

Traveller's tip on dining

Lots of small cafes very near.

great location in Prague

We cannot say enough about the courtesy and helpfulness of the entire staff at The Golden Wheel. Throughout our eight night stay, everyone was gracious, ready and willing to help in any situation--from arranging day trips to assisting with small concerns. Everyone spoke English as well, a real plus that was gratefully appreciated. The room was amazingly spacious, and nicely furnished. Beds were comfortable and the bathroom was immaculate. The breakfast was a fantastic selection of hot and cold selections with a variety to satisfy every taste. An extra-special "plus" was the garden terrace--a great place to relax and unwind after a day of sightseeing. Free high-speed internet access facilitated communication with everyone back home, too. This is truly an excellent hotel!

The recommendations were absolutely right!

Booked this hotel on the basis of the reviews on Expedia. If anything they were understated! The staff could not have been more helpful. No need for lunch (well maybe just a Czech beer!) if you eat the breakfast! We were in room 307 towards the back (I chose an upgrade)looking out onto the castle, lovely and quiet and spotlessly clean. Location fine (10 minutes to Charles Bridge)and the slight hill was no problem. I could not have chosen a better hotel!

Traveller's tip on recreational activities

Do go to the Don Giovanni Puppet show at the National Marionette Theatre, Zatecka Street 1 (beware of imitations!)- very clever and very funny. It is not on every night though.

Romantic get away

We stayed in one of the garden rooms (no. 16-18 i think) and it was lovely. The room was very large and it was always clean and well kept. The hotel is a bit of a walk to the main part but it didn’t bother us at all, don’t let it put you off. Food was amazing (breakfast that is) and it’s a realy nice area around the hotel. Great for a romantic gate away i would go back to this hotel and recomend it to anyone!!!!

Traveller's tip on saving a few bucks

Eating at a local place costs half as much and tastes twice as nice, eat at the resurants near the hotel for a great taste.

Recomended and would return without question.

Lovely hotel. Excellent location; very close to castle. Walking distance to Charles Bridge and the Old Town beyond. Spotlessly clean. Very helpful and considerate staff. Excellent english. Cheerful and smiling. We were in one of the rooms at the front of the hotel which was a little too warm (September)and suffered from a little street noise; but after 10:00 pm it was quiet until morning. Maybe upgrade next time?

Traveller's tip on local attractions

Recommend the following restaurants: Waldstejnska Hospoda (good quality, excellent value) Kampa Park (excellent location and quality but expensive) At the other extreme try: Pivovarsky Dum (pub dining on the 22 tram route)

Lovely Hotel, location, and extremely helpful staff.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Golden Wheel. The staff was beyond helpful, giving us great recommendations as to where to dine and what to see and generally friendly and quick to give assistance. It’s a beautiful setting and building.

I would stay there again very nice

I researched several months ago, and knew that was the hotel for me. Disappointed that I had to get an upgrade just to have a bath in the room.

Traveller's tip

Hotel in nice location. 10 minutes, all uphill from Charles bridge. Some may find it exhausting, but I always enjoyed the walk back, passing some lovely restuarants, which we tried, and were very nice. Some a bit over-priced though.

Great place to stay

Small, friendly, comfortable hotel in an excellent spot for seeing all the sights but without the noise and crowds across the river. Major sights are all within walking distance and the journey from the airport to the hotel is cheap and easy to follow on public transport. Information desk at airport gave us instructions. Excellent, substantial breakfast with cold and hot options. English are well catered for in Prague. Would love to return.

Traveller's tip on local attractions

Most churches (and there are many) offer classical concerts in the evening. We attended one in the Church of St. Francis, just by Charles Bridge. Not normally a fan of the classics but it was so atmospheric and beautiful.

Great little hotel near Palace

What a great location and hotel. Adjacent to Palace grounds. Ask for a room that overlooks the Palace. Our room had a balcony. Staff is super-friendly and helpful. Martin at front desk answered many questions and helped with bags. Interesting architecture which combines a very old building with modern amenities like glass elevators. Great included breakfast. Wonderful massage at low rates next door. Good for sore feet and legs from long days walking. If you have trouble walking this hotel may not be for you as it is up a small hill with cobblestones and two steps up to lobby. However everything interesting in Prague has lots of cobblestones and steps. About 2-3 blocks to Charles bridge. I cant say enough good things about this hotel.

Nicest part of Prague

Golden Wheel was everything that previous reviwers said. Very nice people, large very comfortable room, free internet access, nice breakfast/ coffee bar, and even a little roof garden. The side of Prague leading up to the castle is even prettier than the rest of the city with loads of little nooks and crannies and cafes / restaurants in all sorts of archways and courtyards. Great place to stay.

Traveller's tip on nightlife

Although it looks a bit cheesy, the ’Jazz Boat’ is really nice. Go on line at the hotel and you can pick the night to go depending on the style of music, pick your table and seats, look at the menu and book tickets. We went to the blues night on a Friday and had 2.5 hours of great music, a very decent chicken dinner, bottle of wine, and a cruise along the Vltava. Brilliant!

Top trip!

Excellent hotel - previous reviews were spot on -hotel was in ideal location (away from the noise and rush on the other side of the river); short walk to Charles Bridge and rest of town, and equally close to castle. Great hotel staff, great breakfast and extremely clean & comfortable. Top-tip for out of town day is Terinz (ghetto camp) - we used public transport to get there, dead easy and cheaper than organised tour - we needed the time as this was an extremely moving place to visit.

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

many concerts awailable on a walk-in basis, almost every church in towm does an evening concert of about 60mins. we booked some in advance - that was a mistake, we paid a booking fee. on the day we went to a concert every night and on walk in’s you normally got it discounted to stuident rate with no hastle. town is extremey clean and friendly. Bottom line top trip

fine small hotel

We were really pleased with this hotel in a painstakingly restored and attractively decorated building. We had a spectacular view of Prague castle from our room. Breakfast was excellent with lots of fresh fruit and both hot and cold choices. The location is about halfway up the hill to Prague Castle and walking distance to the Charles Bridge.

Traveller's tip on saving a few bucks

The public transportation system is cheap and convenient.

Small Gem in Prague

Great hotel and town. Two days is more than enough to see the town. The hotel is in walking distance to the Castle and to Charles Bridge. It is located on a very quaint street with easy access to quite a few good restaurants.

Traveller's tip on dining

Ask the concierge for recommendations. They gave us great places to eat.

Excellent - What a lovely location!

The location of the hotel was ideal for us, Being up the hill its not for the faint hearted! Only a short walk up gives you some of the best views of the whole city from the castle grounds. The hotel lacks outdoor space but this is to be expected from a city hotel. Breakfast was lovely and the staff always busy cleaning and checking your needs.

Try walking off the beaten track, some of the side street bars and restaurants offer better drinks prices, soft drinks and water more then the beer...moral is to drink the beer when out and buy soft drinks from mini market!

A warm welcome

On Nerudova, the Royal Way (or what was once the King’s approach to Prague Castle), The Golden Wheel stands out from its neighboring inns and hotels. The staff is warm, helpful and accommodating, which made our stay very enjoyable. The rooms are simple, yet comfortable and spacious. Ours looked out onto the busy street and over the rooftops of the castle district. There is also a rooftop terrace accessible with spectacular views of the district. The complimentary breakfast in the Accadia Cafe Bar was great, including fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, meat and cheeses--enough to fuel an entire day of walking and exploring. Internet access is free in the rooms and there is a computer available for guest use, as well. The only drawback to staying at this hotel, or any hotel on this street, is the location. Nerudova is all things touristy, one souvenir shop or cafe after another. For those who want to be in the center of it all, it’s perfect. However, for those who want a quieter setting, or may have trouble negotiating the somewhat steep incline of Nerudova, this might not be the place for you. For us, it was wonderful.

Traveller's tip on dining

U Sedmi Svabu, just off Nerudova at Jansky Vrsek 14, is a medieval tavern with traditional Czech fare. The menu is varied--beef, goulash, pork knuckle, fish--and prices are reasonable. Try the ribs; they’re excellent!

Nice place to stay away from the tourist center

Rooms MUCH laarger than most small hotels. A short but UP HILL walk from Charkes Bridge. Half way to the castle area! Rear room preferable - better view and much quieter. Stree in front can be busy but if it’s not too hot to close the double windows, it will be quiet enough. BUT if you don’t like walking up the hill a couple of times a day - stay on the other side of the river!

Traveller's tip on dining

The little pub at the very top of the street(on the way to the castle) has a lovely view and surprisingly good food.

Wonderful!

Wonderful place to stay! Close enough to major sights, but not too close to be busy and noisy outside the hotel. We were trying to stay on a tight budget, so we got the smallest room they had, but still got an AMAZING view of Prague castle! Can’t wait to go back!

Wonderful hotel

This is a wonderful boutique hotel, located along the route of the royal procession in Mala Strana, also known as "Lesser Town," (near the Prague Castle). The area is just lovely - cobblestone streets, and much quieter than the boisterous Old Town section. The staff were incredibly friendly and cheerfully helped us figure out how to get to each of our locations each day. The breakfast was excellent, with lovely hotel staff to serve us. The hotel is a wonderful value for what we paid, and one of the nicest boutique hotels we have stayed at. One word of caution - to get to the hotel from the tram, you have to walk up 3 blocks of cobblestone-paved sidewalks. If you do not take a taxi to the hotel, be prepared for this small hike with your suitcases. We would highly recommend staying at this hotel.

Excellent!!!

The hotel is located a couple of blocks from the Palace/Castle and within walking distance from the Charles Bridge and the other side of town. The hotel has been remodeled, has an elevator, internet, and breakfast is included. The only little problem we had was finding parking for our car (rental). The hotel staff actually helped a lot and found parking in another hotel a couple of blocks from ours.

Outstanding hotel

This was a very quaint, comfortable hotel in a nice location-close to Prague Castle and within walking distance to everything we wanted to do and see. The staff was fantastic, and the hotel was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was served every morning in a small cafe in the lobby and was delicious each day that we were there.

Excellent hotel, a real treasure

Outstanding location, walking distance to all historical, cultural attractions, including the Charles Bridge, the Castle, the old city, the Jewish Ghetto, numerous churches and the Cathedral. Small boutique hotel, only 17 rooms. Very friendly staff, excellent breakfast. Could not ask for a better residence while exploring the rich attractions of this great city.
