Certainly not 4 star quality very disappointing.
Very dissapointing. Tired and unwelcoming hotel. Basic and spartan with the appearance of being run on a shoestring. Would not suit anyone looking for the usual extras expected from a 4 star hotel. The only plus being the pleasant lady who served breakfast, which was quite reasonable. It was evident that the hotel had very few guests staying whilst we were there. Large hotel with abundant amount of rooms as displayed in their literature but we were put in the smallest room possible, which was very basic and certainly not 4 star standard.

Wonderful Stay in Cortona
We just returned from our vacation in Italy with 3 days in Cortona. The San Michele was well located near the center of town so all restaurants and other activities were close by. The hotel staff was really wonderful in every respect-cheerful and pleasant, good restaurant suggestions, helpful with luggage and other requests. We asked them to check on our air conditioning unit (Italy was having a severe heat wave) when we went out the dinner and when we returned they said they couldn’t make it any better so they transferred us to another room and helped us move all our things. The interior of the hotel is quite interesting and beautiful including some courtyards and sitting areas. They also had that rarity in Italy these days, a full breakfast buffet (cold meats, cheeses, pastries, fruits, scrambled and hard boiled eggs, etc) included in the price we arranged on Expedia. They also allowed us to leave our baggage in our room while we made a brief visit to Arezzo.
Traveller's tip on dining
We really enjoyed the Boccaccio Restaurant in Cortona- good food, nice family and around the corner from the San Michele.
