Good location. Service great, restaurant just misses "great"

The location of this hotel, up on the Buda castle hill, is superb. It’s close to many of Budapest’s top sights and also relatively quiet and very civilised. Be aware that there’s not much public transport up the hill, if that bothers you - it is quite high. Room was pleasant, quite large, and well equipped. The shower (over the bath) wasn’t impressive, could do with more water pressure. A couple of things missed in the cleaning, including a sticky bedside table. Otherwise fine. The hotel’s restaurant (the hotel info pack in the room had wrong details for the restaurant, by the way) is good. It narrowly misses me calling it "great" by over-cooking both venison and scallops and by hugely over-pricing most of its wines. The house dry riesling was a bit dodgy, too. Staff excellent throughout, very friendly and helpful.

If you want to save cash, there is a train from the airport into town, but it’s not widely reported in guide books from what I’ve seen. Also, watch the taxi rates in town - there is a maximum but no standard, and they vary quite widely. Taxi drivers tend to drive like a man possessed. Think Rome but with faster-moving traffic on the outskirts... use the seatbelts! Catering on Hungarian trains (we took one to our next stop, Vienna) seems to be to 1980s British Rail standards (i.e., dreadful). Take snacks with you! The views of the town are best from up the big hill and from the gallery of the cathedral. The hill’s free, the cathedral isn’t. The decent restaurants in Budapest aren’t cheap, so get recommendations if you don’t want to spend a lot. If you want good, try Pierrot in the castle district.

Beware the mini-bar

A very nice hotel in an excellent location. My only complaint -- it appears I paid almost $25.00 for a bottle of water from the mini-bar when I checked out and charged it to my credit card. A bit much...

Traveller's tip on dining

Many very nice small places to eat in the area.

Conveniently Situated

The hotel is awesome. Staff is friendly and very helpful. The hotel is nicely located near the famous Fishermen Bastion,St. Mathias Church, and the Royal Palace. I was surprised about the location - I love the Old Town feeling with cobbled stone streets. Lots of restaurants that serve local food as well as shops with nice souvenirs. If you need to go to Pest side, there is a bus stop near the hotel. Very easy to go around. I highly recommend it.
